The executive members of the Rennell and Bellona Students Association (RBSA) at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) paid a formal courtesy visit to the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Honiara on Friday.

This was aimed at strengthening ties and exploring opportunities for student development.

Speaking to the Solomon Star, RBSA President Erwin Hakatiginiu described the visit as simple but meaningful, saying it marked an important step towards building a long-term partnership with the Chinese Embassy.

"Our visit had three key purposes – to introduce our association and its initiatives, to explore potential avenues for student support such as scholarships, workshops and training opportunities, and to establish a positive relationship with the Embassy," Hakatiginiu said.

He said the Embassy responded positively to the association's proposals and assured the student leaders of its willingness to support RBSA initiatives and maintain communication to strengthen future cooperation.

"The Chinese Embassy assured us they would support our student initiatives and continue to keep in touch to build a strong cooperative relationship.

"We believe this partnership can benefit our students in the future," he said.

Hakatiginiu acknowledged the Chinese Embassy's ongoing bilateral support for Solomon Islands, particularly in creating opportunities for students and young people through scholarships, training programmes and capacity-building initiatives.

"As RBSA President, I acknowledge the Chinese Embassy's bilateral initiatives across Solomon Islands in supporting students and youth through the PRC Government Scholarship programme, workshops and training opportunities," he said.

While recognising that tangible outcomes would take time, Hakatiginiu said establishing a strong relationship with the Embassy was an important foundation for creating future opportunities for students from Rennell and Bellona Province.

"I understand that the outcomes and assurances given by the Embassy during our courtesy visit will not happen overnight, but building partnerships is the first step towards creating long-term opportunities and benefits for our students, especially those from Renbel," he said.

Hakatiginiu concluded by expressing gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for hosting the delegation.

"I would like to convey our sincere appreciation to the Ambassador and the Embassy officials for their warm reception, hospitality and productive engagement with our student leadership during this visit," he said.

Third-year Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Bachelor of Business Entrepreneurship student Samantha Wheatley has been selected to participate in the Pacific Mobility Campus 2026 Programme, becoming the second student from the Bachelor of Business Entrepreneurship programme to be selected this year.

The fully funded regional academic mobility programme will provide Samantha with the opportunity to study in New Caledonia and French Polynesia alongside outstanding students from across the Pacific, strengthening regional collaboration, leadership, and cross-cultural learning.

Samantha says she is honoured to represent SINU and looks forward to gaining new knowledge, building lasting connections, and applying her experiences to support entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and community growth in Solomon Islands.

Congratulations, Samantha, on this outstanding achievement. We wish you every success as you proudly represent SINU and Solomon Islands on the regional stage.
