The dogs were full of energy before today’s Dog Cart session. I love seeing that enthusiasm, and I still want to know how the whole team moves once we start.

The ride includes the preparation, the work and the moment afterward when everyone comes back down. Those details make this more than a fast clip of two happy dogs.

Your dog’s excitement at the start is not a recovery check.

A dog can be eager to run even when the previous session was demanding. Before I add another Canicross workout, I look at what happens after training and during the following day.

Does the breathing settle steadily?
Does the movement remain relaxed and even?
Can the dog switch off again?
Is there any unusual stiffness, tiredness or change in behaviour?

With Pepper and Iluq, I am not looking for one perfect sign. I am looking for patterns. Their response helps me decide whether the next step should be another run, an easier session or recovery.

A training plan should follow the dog in front of you, not simply the number of workouts written on paper.

Canicross is more than running with a dog attached to your waist.

It is learning to move as a team. When to encourage, when to slow down, how to communicate clearly and when today’s plan needs adjusting.

Iluq and I have built that connection one run at a time. Not every start is tidy. Not every session is fast. But every run teaches us something about each other.
