Seahorses (Hippocampus sp.) are endangered due to the current fishing practices. They are used in the traditional Chinese medicine and aquariums.

Traditional medicine is the main responsible for illegal fishing with over 10 million seahorses per year.

Seahorses are not suitable for aquariums. They are very sensitive to stress and diseases which often leads to die in a short period of time. Nevertheless hundreds of thousands are sold in aquariums around the world every year. Commercial regulations for sea species are not properly established in most countries.

According to WWF even countries, like Sweden, that are expected to be advanced in this matter are not in reality. The Swedish regulation is weak and protection for threatened species in the international forum is not good either.

In some countries as the Philippines seahorses are dried out and sold as souvenirs.

Your help is needed to stop these illegal activities. Do not buy traditional medicine containing animal ingredients. Buying death animals or parts of them as souvenir is a crime, and it is severely punished in certain countries. Report any suspicious illegal activity.
