Nordic Islands Adventure Race

Huge congratulations to SAFAT, Swedish Armed Forces Adventure Team ( and ) for their SECOND World Champion title. Fist 2021 in Spain, second last year in Paraguay and now World Champions 2023! Impressive.

As the cycle leg moves away from Tórshavn and into the countryside of Islands linked by undersea tunnels and ferries, the views have started to open up and the Faroes are starting to show off.

The sun has set on day 1 of NIAR 2023. The first teams have made it through gear zone 1, picking up their pack rafts to move between islands on the trekking leg. It has been a day of stunning weather and all teams made good progress through the course.

Overnight update on NIAR 2023. All teams are through transition 1 at the iconic Gásadalur waterfall where puffins and sheep were the primary spectators of the race. Sadly, Team 15 - Hamilton adventure had to withdraw overnight for health reasons. In a brilliant navigation move, Estonian Ace took the lead from NIAR Adventure Team and are holding on to a comfortable lead as they make their way to cp49 and pro point 51 (cp50 was removed from the course).

It was a beautiful sunny morning in some parts of the Islands this morning, but in true Faroe style, it is foggy and raining just over the hill.

Foot care and good hygiene in adventure racing is essential and using the elements, like clean air and crisp water- both plentiful and as cold as ice in the Faroes, is helpful. Team 09 Bend Racing: Skin Doctor stopped this morning to air their feet and eat some food on their way to cp 38. They are out of the clouds but the wind is still chilly and it has started to rain.

From transition 2- trekking to pack raft- the teams need to carry their gear almost 5km to a point where it is safe to launch. The ocean currents around the Faroes are extremely powerful and there is a high risk of getting washed out from shore. For this reason pack rafting has been limited to areas where there is a blockade against the currents and the waters are calmer.

Estonian Ace were the first team into T2 and here they head up the road with the outstanding view of distant Islands rising out of the ocean.

While the teams at the pointy end of the race have spent much of the day paddling around the Islands, the mid field are well into their 87km trek. Many of these, and the teams still making their way towards transition 2 will make the call to skip pro point 47, effectively giving them a forward boost but also eliminating them from the competitive part of the field.

Today was the arrival day for many. We’ve been driving teams and gear, set out checkpoints on the course, we cought sight if wales -but hey, even a forest!
Tomorrow will be registration and gear check. And plenty of prep for the crew before we head out into the adventure on sunday.
