The various rolling exercises on the Mat are dynamic movements that work on core control and stability as you move.

One of the differences in the various exercises is the positioning of the arms and legs. This affects the stability and control needed to maintain the shape throughout the movement.

How many of these exercises have you tried before?

The Long Stretch exercise on the Reformer involves keeping the spine lengthened as you move the carriage in and out.

The placement of the hands on the footbar play a part in the overall alignment and quality movement.

Wrapping the thumb around the footbar might offer better grip and stability but encourages the shoulder into internal rotation which might affect the overall alignment. In contrast, keeping the thumb with the fingers encourages better connection and alignment.

The Thigh Stretch exercise has two common variations. These include keeping the spine lengthened and stable throughout the movement or bringing the spine into extension as you hinge back.

The first variation emphasises control and stability as you maintain the alignment while changing the spine’s orientation to gravity. In contrast, the second variation focuses on balancing stability with mobility through the movement.

Have you tried both variations?

The Prone Press Up on the Mat is a great foundational exercise to work on thoracic extension.

A possible arm position for the exercise keeps the forearm in contact with the mat as you lift the upper body into extension. An alternative arm position keeps the palms by the side of the body similar to a push up position.

While the focus is on thoracic extension, the two arm positions slightly alter the angle and range of the movement making it feel significantly different!

The Calf Power exercise on the CoreAlign is a great exercise for stretching and strengthening the calves.

By using the resistance from the elastic band, it creates an active stretch in the calf as you enter into a lunge before using that same resistance to work the calf muscle as you lift the heel off.

A great exercise for individuals with tight calf muscles and for training the strength and control of the toe/push off phase.

The Shortbox Series on the Reformer includes two variations; rolldown and hinge.

The rolldown involves articulating the spine as you lean back, transiting from an upright position into a
C-curve.

The hinge involves maintaining axial length and height through the spine as you lean back.

While both require core control and stability, the movement and corresponding demand are
significantly different!

Which do you find more challenging?

The Alternating Leg Pumps of the Gyrotonic Hamstring Series alternates between two positions in a fluid and continuous movement.

The reciprocal movement imitates functional movements such as walking and running. The exercise strengthens the hip extensors and stretches the hip flexors while working on coordination and control.

An excellent exercise for athletes and dancers!

Our Founding instructor, Danny, performs the Parakeet on the Trapeze Table.

The Parakeet exercise requires good strength and control in the core and entire posterior chain to move the push through bar while keeping the trunk suspended in the air.

It is an intermediate-advanced exercise and movement that highlights a good understanding and awareness of various fundamental movements and principles

Have you tried the Parakeet before?

The Prone Shoulder Press is a great exercise to build upper body strength, especially around the shoulders. The setup of the exercise effectively replicates the movement of a shoulder press often done at the gym, but with a closed chain connection for the arms to focus on good alignment and congruency.

The movement could be done with the elbows kept parallel and pointing to the ground or flared and reaching to the side. Depending on your shoulder mobility and strength, both positions might feel significantly different!

Have you felt the difference?

In the Gyrotonic Hamstring Series, the legs are attached to the tower and go through a series of movements with many similar to the ones found in Pilates on the Reformer and Trapeze Table. Despite the similarities, there are a significant differences!

In Gyrotonic, the legs are allowed to go below the bench. This allows the legs to hip into hip extension, effectively working the muscles in a bigger range of motion!
