Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa 北少林拳法

天下武功出少林

Popular sayings in Chinese folklore related to this practice include "All Martial Arts under Heaven originated from Shaolin" and "Shaolin Kung Fu is the Best under Heaven," indicating the influence of Shaolin Kung Fu among Martial Arts.

This ancient Chinese Shaolin Art with a history of more than 2,500 years from the very roots of the Chinese Culture is based on the understanding of the Ying - Yang principle which theorized the balance of hard and soft skills.

Its fighting techniques are as practical as those practiced in the Northern Shaolin Temple in Henan province, China and the constant practice of the Art will not only provide an effective means of self-defense, but will also result in the following benefits:

Body: Enhance physical fitness and good health through regular exercises.

Mind: Build self-confidence with a disciplined and alert mind.

Spirit: Inculcate a spirit of righteousness based on humility, kindness to the needy, elimination of self-centeredness, mutual respect for others and a sense of due respect to elders especially to one’s parents.

The Shaolin Art evolved from the observation of natural elements and various animals’ natural instinct of survival against bigger predators.

Grand Master Sebastian Soh initiated into the study of the Shaolin Martial Art at the age of 5 by his father, he has been studying and practicing the Northern Shaolin Art of self-defense. He excelled in Yizhimei, Xiashanhu, Luohanquan and Qimeigun. He was also a 6th Dan Black Belt in Japanese Kempo Karate-Do.

In 1971, Grand Master Soh founded Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa 北少林拳法 and has been actively promoting the Art of Northern Shaolin as a Mental and Physical Discipline throughout Singapore.

Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa 北少林拳法 “The Art of the Fist.” It gives the equal emphasis to both hands and foots techniques. Unlike some of the other “self-defenses” Arts, it has not become merely a sport to be used in tournaments which focus too much on points system under many rules and regulations. This limits your fighting skills and abilities in a real street fight where there is no rule and regulation.

Grand Master Soh had blended both Chinese and Japanese Martial Arts styles in his pursuit of perfection for versatility and specialization of different techniques for different parts of the body.

”Chuen Fa” 拳法 in Chinese meaning ”The Way of Penetrating Power and Grace” and Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa is an unrestricted specialization of the 2 Arts, the Chinese and Japanese Martial Arts.

Grand Master Soh approached Martial Arts in a scientific way whereby he saw numerous barriers to overcome and constant discoveries to be made.

Discovering the Art is the key to learning Martial Art. Learning without discovering, one forgets. Thus, incorporating the traditions and cultural aspects of the Martial Art.

Grand Master Soh always urge his students to contemplate analytically over every techniques that he taught. He believed there is no end to every technique and also no end to perfection.

The Northern Shaolin Style of Kung Fu is one of the most prominent traditional northern styles of Chinese Martial Arts. The northern styles of Kung Fu generally emphasize long range techniques, quick advances and retreats, wide stances, kicking and leaping techniques, whirling circular blocks, quickness, agility and aggressive attacks.

The system teaches empty-hand techniques and weaponry through predetermined combinations known as forms, routines or movement of sets. The students learn the basics by practicing the routines until the movements in the routines can be executed naturally based on instinct. Then two or multiple man sets are practiced to train responses and applications of techniques learned from the sets. The practice sets and routines are not only practical in applications but are also graceful and artistic in nature. The fluidness of the movements combined with acrobatic techniques are trademarks of the Northern Shaolin sets.

The purposes of Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa are to promote physical, mental and spiritual health through its Martial Art system of building the Yang and Yin energy of every individual.

MISSION

Different Chinese Martial Arts schools have different missions and objectives in their training. They could be differentiated as follows:

• Cultural appreciation, artistic display and stage performance.

• General health and fitness.

• Sports and sparring competition.

• Self-Defense techniques to counter ambush and weapon attacks.

While Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa 北少林拳法 promotes general health, fitness, teaches traditional Chinese Martial Arts and conduct sparring training. Our mission is really to equip students with proficiency in self-defense.

The class is kept small and exclusive so that we could give the best instruction and attention to each deserving student. You can be sure you are getting the best practical instructions in Chinese Martial Arts and self-defense.

Chinese Martial Art is different from other non-Chinese Martial Arts in many ways as it has many principles and techniques which are not easily understood.

You will be made to practice certain moves thousands of times but you might not appreciate their usefulness and effectiveness until later when you have put in a lot of practice and self-reflection. So, trust in your instructors and persevere in your training.

All our instructors are volunteers because of our passion for the Art of Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa. It is also our way of repaying our gratitude towards the instructors who had taught us before and to the instructors who are still teaching us today. In addition, every senior belt is instilled with the moral duty to share their training, knowledge and experiences with the junior belts.

Our commitment and dedication are shown in that the instructors are paying the same class fees as the students we teach. The class fees are much lower than other commercially run Martial Arts school because we are only collecting enough to pay for the rental of premises and for class expenses, materials and equipment.

Since we are not paid or motivated by monetary rewards, we do not need to treat students as customers. Accordingly, we are much stricter than other commercial school instructors and expect a lot of hard work, discipline and commitment from the students. The training will be tough but if you could bear it, you will be rewarded with skills that could save your life and the lives of others should you be attacked.

We teach Chinese Martial Arts in the Northern Shaolin traditions. Trainings include handworks, foot works, patterns, self-defenses, sparring and pole.

Syllabus include the following techniques:

1. Handworks - Punch, chop, elbow strike, palm strike, block, grab, spear, poke, knock, flick, upper snap, drag, pull and push etc.

2. Blocks - Upper block, lower block, reverse block, palm block, cutting block, square block, circular block, Luo Han block and Ying Yang block etc.

3. Punches - Straight punch, reverse punch, double punch, triple punch, roundhouse punch, canon fist and back fist etc.

4. Kicks - Front, back, crescent, side, back thrust, roundhouse, hook, sweep, slam, sliding, jumping, hop-in, hammer, pick up, paddle, flying, double, reverse and spinning kicks etc.

5. Movements - Dodge, shrug, front roll, back roll, diving roll, break fall and cartwheel etc.

7. Other Techniques - Shoulder, hip, knee, throw, breathing, sparring, wood breaking, brick breaking and conditioning of hands and foots by punching and kicking heavyweight sand bag etc.

We do not train and participate in sport sparring competitions as we are training to defend against real life attacks where there are no fight rules. Distracting and deceptive techniques most commonly seen in martial art fighting movies but, ironically are forbidden in sport sparring competitions are usually pivotal strategies in self-defense.

In trainings, we do not wear protective gears like head gear, face guard, mouth guard, hand glove, groin guard, chest guard, knee guard, shin guard, arm guard and foot guard as we do not have these in any surprise attack in real life. For instance, we need to defend ourselves against knife attacks with empty hands.

However, during sparring, we do observe strict safety rules such as no eye jab, no head butt, no bite ears, no groin kick, no pe*******on of hand strikes to throat and pe*******on of kicks to rib cage, no breaking of skin and no dislocation or breaking of joints and bones.

One day should you have the unfortunate occasion to use our self-defense techniques to save your life and the lives of others, you will be grateful to the instructors and to the tough training they have put you through in the class.

Northern Shaolin Chuen Fa 北少林拳法 is a Martial Art suitable for all ages. Regular participation enhances one’s physical well-being, builds self-confidence and develops a disciplined mind.
