The concept of #มีน้ำใจ (mee nam jai) — which literally translates to "having water of the heart," meaning to be kind and helpful — is something Thai people are taught from a young age and is deeply rooted in Thai culture.

I recently visited Bangkok, and while I was trying to take my luggage out of a car on a busy street, the handle suddenly broke off. Immediately, a nearby motorcycle taxi rider came to the rescue, taking the initiative to help and fix it back on. I was so touched. My sister even managed to capture the moment.

On another occasion, while I was pulling my large luggage around an MRT platform, near the escalator, looking around for an elevator, someone pointed me in the right direction, without me even asking.

And yet another time, as I stood near the MRT entrance with my luggage, looking for signage, someone instinctively pointed me toward the Airport Rail Link—again, without me asking.

When I visited the Thailand office, my newly met colleagues were incredibly friendly and helpful. One of them immediately shared the WiFi with me, later showed me the way to the restroom, asked if I needed to charge my laptop, and even reminded me about an appointment I had casually mentioned to him. He did all of this without me asking, which made me feel so well taken care of as a guest there.

When I lived in Thailand, these small acts of kindness were quite common. But after living overseas for so many years, I’ve come to realize that this is actually a privilege—one that I deeply appreciate.
