🍴 Camp Mealtime Essentials: Know the Difference

Our previous post looked at compact personal mealtime essentials for school camp.

But there is an important distinction between essentials used for eating and essentials used for outdoor cooking.

🥣 Personal mealtime essentials
Lunchboxes, cups and utensils are used for eating and drinking. Depending on the camp, students may be asked to bring their own.

🔥 Outdoor cooking essentials
Mess tins, solid-fuel stoves and solid fuels serve a different purpose. They are used for outdoor cooking activities and are more commonly associated with specific outdoor programmes, camping activities or uniformed groups rather than a standard school-camp packing list.

This is why adding more camping equipment does not necessarily mean being better prepared.

The better approach is to follow the school's packing list and understand what are the activities and the items needed.

Cooking equipment and fuel should only be used according to the programme's instructions and supervision.

Different activity. Different essentials. Prepare for what your camp actually requires.

🏕️ New Term, Camp-Ready: Mealtime Essentials

A new school term also means upcoming school camps for some students.

If your child’s school packing list includes personal mealtime items, choosing compact options can make them easier to pack, use and keep together throughout camp.

✔ Foldable Lunchbox — full-size for meals, compact after use
✔ Foldable Camp Cup — pops up to use and collapses down to pack
✔ Foldable Fork & Spoon Set — detachable for use and folds down to keep in its carrying pouch

When students are managing their own belongings, simple and compact items can make mealtimes a little easier.

Always follow the packing list provided by your child’s school, as camp requirements may differ.

Pack, use and keep together.

🏕️ A New Chapter for Outdoor Education in Singapore

Outward Bound Singapore's new Coney Campus officially opened today, expanding opportunities for young people to learn and grow through outdoor education.

The 12-hectare campus features more than 70 high-adventure elements and over 30 team-based challenges, with some designed to be wheelchair accessible. The activities are structured progressively to help students develop confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills as they take on new challenges together.

With the new campus, OBS aims to offer the MOE-OBS programme to all Secondary 3 students by 2030.

Outdoor education is about more than completing activities. It gives students opportunities to step outside familiar environments, work with others, face challenges and discover what they are capable of.

For parents preparing children for school camps, always start with the official packing list provided by the school, as requirements differ between programmes.

🌤️ School Holiday Outdoor Play Essentials

Planning a park visit, picnic or family day outdoors? A few compact essentials can help everyone stay comfortable and prepared without overloading the bag.

✔ Foldable lunchbox — stores snacks or a simple meal and packs down after use
✔ Microfibre towel — handy after active play or an unexpected splash
✔ Arm sleeves — add coverage during sunny outdoor activities
✔ Reusable poncho — keeps you prepared for sudden rain

Complete it with drinking water, sunscreen and insect repellent as needed, and remember to check the weather and PSI readings before heading out.

Enjoy the school holidays and stay ready for the outdoors!

🎒 Why Backpacks Work Better for School Camp

During school camp, students may need to carry their bags between the bus, campsite and sleeping area. Some routes may include stairs or rocky paths, making a backpack more practical than a trolley bag.

A backpack:
✔ Spreads weight across both shoulders
✔ Keeps both hands free while moving
✔ Is suitable for stairs and rocky paths
✔ Makes it easier for students to carry their own bags independently

Trolley bags are not allowed for school camp. Before camp, let your child try carrying the fully packed backpack and adjust both shoulder straps so that it feels comfortable and manageable.

Always follow your child’s school packing list for the required items and quantities to avoid underpacking or overpacking.

☀️ Outdoor Protection That Matters

Outdoor school camp activities can mean long hours outdoors—under the sun, around insects, across rough surroundings and sometimes caught in sudden rain.

Suitable protection can help them participate more comfortably:

✔ Insect-repellent spray or patches for outdoor areas
✔ A hat and sunblock for sunny conditions
✔ Arm sleeves or a Dri-Fit long sleeve top for additional coverage
✔ Track pants to help protect legs from minor scratches during activities (eg. rock-climbing) and insect bites during walks
✔ A reusable poncho for sudden rain

🏕️ Stay protected, stay ready outdoors.

🏕️ Need Help During Camp?

During school camps, students may sometimes feel unsure, unwell or uncomfortable.

Some students may hesitate to ask for help because they feel shy, do not want to trouble others, or are unsure who to approach.

Before camp, it helps to remind children that camp instructors are there to guide and support them.

Students should inform camp instructors if they are:

✔ Feeling unwell or uncomfortable
✔ Feeling unsure what to do
✔ Feeling lost or separated
✔ Need help during activities

It is better to inform camp instructors early, instead of keeping quiet and letting the situation become harder to manage.

A simple reminder for students:

It is okay to ask for help during camp.

🏕️ Dual Purpose Torchlight

During school camps, students may need to move around when the surroundings are darker, especially during night routines or after lights-out.

A torchlight is a simple item that can be useful in many small situations during camp.

This dual purpose torchlight can be used as both a torch and a lantern, making it practical for different camp situations.

It can help students:

✔ Find items in their camp bag more easily
✔ Move around more confidently in low-light areas
✔ Use it during night toilet trips when needed
✔ Use it as a lantern when extra light is needed

It comes with 3 modes — bright, dim and blinking — and uses 3 x AAA batteries.

Before camp, it is also good to check that the batteries are working, so the torchlight is ready when needed.

A small item, but a practical one that can help students feel more prepared during camp.
