A four-year study of 7,000 kids found early swimmers were more than a year ahead in some reading and math skills. The benefit may come from the coordinated movement itself. Kicking, reaching and breathing in rhythm all ask a young brain to work in sync. You don't need a fancy program to use this. Splash time, a local lesson, or just letting them move freely all count. Sometimes the best learning happens far from a desk.
