Stretch your Limits

Why do I need to stretch? Is stretching just for dancers and athletes?

Stretching keeps muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a good range of motion in the joints. Without it, muscles shorten and become tight. [Harvard Health Publishing, Sept 2013]

Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean and flexible, so that exertion does not put too much strain on the muscle itself.

Pilates emphasises dynamic active stretching. Muscles lengthen while working against resistance when executing the movement in different planes of motion.

Long, lean legs!

Lucky for us, we have Pilates to help elongate and tone our legs, with the methods, tools and techniques it offers.

Four reasons why pilates helps us have long, lean ‘ballet legs’

1- works from the ‘center’ or core
2- works the small muscles

3- works with specialised apparatus

4- works with specific repertoire

In pilates, movement in the legs relyo n stability in the torso and draws strength from your core muscles in the abdominal region. A strong core combined with good posture relieves weight and ‘heaviness’ from your legs.

In legwork, pilates activates and works the smaller muscles which allows the larger muscles, that tend to dominate movement, to de-bulk and lengthen.

Specialised apparatus with springs provides that continuous resistance throughout the movement, in particular the release or “letting go” portion of the movement to its completion.

The legs are an active integrated part of almost all exercise in pilates. Furthermore, there are specific repertoires that would target legwork or conditioning of the legs should this be your focus.

Slow - the Way to Go?

“In an age of speed, I began to think, nothing could be more invigorating than going slow. In an age of distraction, nothing can feel more luxurious than paying attention.” (Pico Iyer

)

One of the things the current pandemic might have taught us is that it is actually okay to slow down.

The Singapore ‘circuit breaker’ put us all on ‘pause’ and helped us to realise that we have been doing too much too fast. Greater emphasis seems to now be placed on slowness and mindfulness in many aspects of life including exercise.

In pilates, slower, more intentional movement allows precision and a more effective workout.

Get a Leg Up

While the core is referred to as the “powerhouse”, in pilates much attention is given to leg and footwork. In combination with your core, control and body balance are achieved by the large muscle group in the body which is made up of muscles in the lower body.

👉 Strong legs don’t just look good, they’re great for your health too!
