What muscle groups does swimming develop and its benefits?

ActiveSG:
"Swimming is a low-impact sport that incorporates a wide range of muscle groups and most muscles in the body are worked in different ways. Because of this, risk of injury is very low and the benefits are numerous. When stroke techniques are executed properly, the muscles lengthen and increase in flexibility. This is why most competitive swimmers have broader shoulders and extremely toned physiques.

Muscles developed by swimming

Although each stroke uses different muscle groups to execute different techniques, all swimming strokes will develop the following muscles:

- Core abdominal and lower back muscles that keep the body steady in streamlined positions in the water to reduce drag.

- Deltoid and shoulder muscles to help the hands have proper entry in the water and to reach out far.

- Forearm muscles that are worked when pulling in the water for more propulsion.

- Upper back muscles that stabilise the shoulders throughout the swimming strokes.

- Glutes and hamstring muscles to keep the body in a balanced position and to aid in propulsion."

Exercising in water: Big heart benefits and little downside - Harvard Health 14/08/2024

Havard Health - Exercising in water: Big heart benefits and little downside

"Compared with brisk walking, swimming allows you to meet your fitness goals with less stress on your joints and muscles.

In terms of convenience, it's hard to beat brisk walking as a form of exercise. You don't need any special equipment or venue, and most people can do it. But for some people—such as those with achy knees, sore hips, or substantial weight—walking may be uncomfortable. And during the winter, harsh weather in many parts of the country can make walking outdoors unpleasant—even treacherous at times. A water workout in a warm indoor pool, followed by a relaxing sauna could be an appealing alternative that's also good for your heart.

Relatively few people swim on a regular basis, so large studies looking at the benefits of physical activity in relation to cardiovascular health have tended to lump swimming together with other types of exercise. Plenty of evidence points to lower rates of heart disease among people who do regular, moderate-to-vigorous-intensity exercise—and swimming laps definitely fits the bill."

Just Keep Swimming: 9 Health Benefits of Water Workouts

"Remember the joy of childhood when you’d spend a hot summer day splashing around in a cold pool with friends? Maybe you were even on the swim team growing up, and the sound of a whistle takes you back to those starting splashes at the beginning of a race.

Why not rediscover that love of the water as an adult? Exercise physiologist Christopher Travers, MS, explains why swimming — along with other aquatic exercises like water walking and water aerobics — is so good for your body and mind."

Exercise as medicine: How to keep active amid chronic illness and other setbacks 02/08/2024

Getting the right exercise prescription

"Exercise can have medicinal benefits when tailored to your health conditions.

Lawyer Jeyaraj Indra Raj, who turns 71 in 2024, used to wake up gasping for breath in his 30s. The stress of work had made him develop asthma.

In addition to disturbed sleep, he could no longer play trumpet solos at church.

Doctors at St Luke’s Hospital recommended that he start swimming to improve his lung capacity. Mr Jeyaraj now clocks 30 laps five times a week at the Singapore Swimming Club and also fits in a long walk of up to 9km once a week.

This exercise regimen has enabled him to continue playing the trumpet at church and sleep through the night without worry.

He takes medication to manage diabetes and high blood pressure, but says these chronic conditions would probably be worse without his regular swims.

“Apart from the physical benefits, there are mental benefits,” says Mr Jeyaraj, who is a member of St Luke’s Hospital’s advisory council. “After exercising, I feel like I’m on cloud nine.”"
