SEA Games is finally over and CNA has begun its usual post-Games mortem. The same playbook is in motion again. Invite ex-athletes (UK Shyam, etc.) who write thousands of words reminiscing their time as athletes, comparing it to now and claiming those today have it better, and saying we have room to improve and that corporate Singapore has to step in.
But they’re not saying anything new. And their suggestions are often unsupported by any objective plans to make these a reality. Sometimes, these ex-athletes have been retired from the game so long and haven’t been involved on the ground, that they’re simply spouting wrong information.
“We can do better” is just talk.
“Corporate Singapore should step in” is also just talk.
Shyam’s “Thailand’s Puripol Boonson should not be used as an example for full-time funding because he’s a generational talent.” is particularly puzzling to me because it’s an illogical statement no matter how I try to slice it.
If CNA wants a relevant piece from someone who has competed for Singapore for more than 10 years, coached for more than 7, and is still on the ground competing and coaching, I will write a commentary piece for them.
These are the topics we will address, that have not been discussed by other ex-athlete columnists:
1) WHO our athletes are
2) WHAT we are up against
3) WHEN we have to implement a new plan
4) WHERE we should be training and competing in the lead up to the next SEA Games
5) HOW to form a national team and make this golden dream a reality
Come 2027 in Malaysia, we should no longer be bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Good good good .... let's debate on this.
But don't let it be a demotivating factor. Where there is a will, there has to be a way...

What do you think?
Since SNOC Secretary General Mark Chay has called on Singapore Athletics to “come to the party” and win more gold medals, I’d like to profile our team members one by one to show who we are and what we’re up against.
Shaun Goh (5,000m and 10,000m) - Full time software engineer, trains before and after work. Has a contract with PUMA, but not paid enough to be a full-time athlete. Managed to become the first man not named Soh Rui Yong to break the 10,000m national record in the last 52 years.
Shaun’s 5,000m PB - 14:55. 10,000m PB - 31:02.
His competition for gold: Kieran Tuntivate of Thailand. Thai-American athlete. Full time professional runner for the Nike Bowerman Track Club. Also supported by various other corporations, Thai and international. Would have been one of the best runners in the USA had he chosen to run for them. Won the unprecedented men’s triple of 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m at this year’s SEA Games. 🥇🥇🥇
Kieran’s 5,000m PB - 13:08. 10,000m PB - 27:17.
Want more gold medals? Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.

📣 Calling All Gymnastics Leaders & Passionate Contributors!
Since 2017, our Technical Advisory Councils (TACs) have played a key role in strengthening Singapore Gymnastics’ technical framework — from athlete pathways and coaching development to judging standards and fair competition regulations.
As we continue to raise the bar for the sport, the SG Board has completed a comprehensive review of the Terms of Reference (TORs) and is pleased to share the revised version with our community.
We are now opening Expressions of Interest for individuals who are passionate, knowledgeable, and committed to contributing to the growth of gymnastics in Singapore.
TAC appointments will be voluntary, for a two-year term (1 Jan 2026 – 31 Dec 2027).
If you believe you can contribute meaningfully to the development of our sport, we’d love to hear from you.
