I'm Jingting. I love going on trails. When I travelled in the past, I would try to slot in some short hikes, even on business trips. However, I didn't know of trail races until recent years.
In Oct 2023, I signed up for the first overseas trail race, Transjeju 10km. I was planning a vacation at Jeju and saw that there was this race. I only wanted to try a 10 as I did not have trail gear, like hydration vests, and I didn't intend to buy any or continue in the sports. I was doing road running more.
Transjeju 10k was a simple race. Yet I found myself enjoying it and looking forward to longer distances which covers more areas of Jeju.
After the race, I thought of one day doing Transjeju 50k which went to Hallasan summit. Administratively, I needed to first do a 20k race, get a 20km UTMB index before I could sign up for the 50k.
Due to the limited number of races in SG, I started eyeing the Trans QJM race held at Pulai Johor, as it would be held much earlier than the races in SG.
When RSH blasted out a trip for training at Pulai for the race, I signed up immediately. I didn't expect Pulai trails to be so tough, so I signed up a second time to try it again when the second training trip was broadcast.
I forgot when I started buying my hydration vests, poles, and trail shoes etc, necessary gear for trail running. Now I have more trail shoes than road running shoes.
Long story short, as of now I actually have not done the Pulai race, nor Transjeju 50k (DNS both). But I have joined multiple other RSH trips and other trail races. I found myself looking forward to the trips to the various Malaysian trails I have never been. I would not have gone to most of them without RSH. Malaysian trails are tough, yet I find them mostly different and I enjoyed the new experiences on new trails. I also felt accomplished each time I finished a planned route.
Other than these, I also realized I made many new friends in this group. Last July, my cousin joined me for the Cultra race. It was then that I realized I have gained many friends in this community, enough to introduce countless people to my cousin over the short trip.

I like it that my love for the trails led me into strength training, with the climbing being a form of strength training itself. I feel that strength training is especially needed as we age.
During a 30k trail race in Hong Kong Lantau, I experienced the worst cramps ever in my legs. After that, I started training my legs in the gym. As my legs grew stronger, I then felt the need to build full-body endurance strength and started joining OCR Fit workout group.
My fitness work now supports my trail goals, rather than the other way around.

The trip to Gunung Yong Belar in March 2026 is still vivid to me.
I started the climb on two consecutive nights of insufficient sleep (not the best idea; I'll try to do better next time). The terrain wasnโt runnable; most of the time, we needed to haul ourselves up using full-body strength. I don't remember ever feeling this exhausted before.
The weather, though, was perfect.
As we descended, I caught one of the most stunning sunsets Iโve ever seen.
Then on the truck ride back, I saw this amazing display of countless brilliant stars shining in the cloudless sky. I couldn't find a word to describe the awe I felt at that moment. It was so beautiful. Praise God for making the world so beautiful and giving us a heart which could feel this awe toward His creation.

Try. Do the trips which allow you to U-turn early if you do not have confidence in finishing the whole route. You do not need fancy gear, but you need basic prep like water and food.
The more you do, the stronger you will be. So don't be discouraged if others seem much stronger. We all start somewhere. You can also start signing up for a race and train for it ๐

JT Lim is an experienced trail runner who knows many nooks and crannies of the Malaysian trails. We are blessed to have him as our ground facilitator and lead runner.
Hi, call me JT. I had first touch on the trail back in 2019, and I found out I could do well on trails. It brought me to what I have today - I enjoy my runcations, unforgettable view from top of the hills and mountain. Moving from triathlon to trail, my Tri friend called me a mountain man, not Ironman anymore. But I still enjoy both Triathlons and Trails.

It started with Cultra 2022. I was helping Edi Huang to manage the teams. Then I was being pulled in to help Jason Lee, which forms the RSH today. I act as lead runner and IC for RSH trips.

Take it easy, get your body ready, then you can enjoy the race and challenge. Anything is possible.
Take care of your body and build the core muscles. It needs time, be patient. Get help and guidance when you are in doubt.

Behind the scenes, Kenneth is quietly working hard on digital enhancements to the RSH experience (coming soon!). He serves as ground facilitator, social media manager, technology & digital manager, and sometimes sweeps the group. Thank you, Kenneth!

Iโm Kenneth, a trail runner who enjoys pushing limits but still learning how to train smart. I balance weekday road runs around the park and weekend trail sessions to prepare for longer races. Recently working towards races like Ultra Trail Australia and UTMB events โ still a work in progress, but enjoying the journey.
Started by joining a few runs through friends and the WhatsApp group. What kept me coming back was the vibe โ not just running, but a community that supports each other whether youโre fast, slow, or just starting out.
RSH plays a big role in keeping me consistent. It gives structure to my training, especially weekend long runs and trail sessions. More importantly, it keeps training enjoyable โ which is key when preparing for longer distances like 50k and beyond.
Definitely the trail sessions โ especially tough ones like Cultra. Itโs not just about the climb, but the shared suffering, laughs, and finishing together. Those moments remind me why I enjoy trail running.
Donโt rush. Go at your own pace and listen to your body. Trail running is not about speed โ itโs about endurance, patience, and consistency. And most importantly, enjoy the journey and the people around you.

Rendell Peh is known to many of us as our steady sweeper and a 100km (now 100mile) runner. We thank him for contributing generously to RSH as ground facilitator, social media manager, lead runner & sweeper.

Hi guys, Iโm Rendell. I have been trail running and hiking for about 2+ years. Some background. I stay right beside T15 trailhead and just a few minutes jog away from Dairy Farm Park. Somehow for many many years, Zhenghua Park PCN (the tarmac part ๐
) has been my daily running route.
Then COVID and Midlife crisis happened. I signed up for my first road marathon in 2022, followed by two more in 2023.
Somewhere along that journey, I started noticing runners in hydration vests moving through Zhenghua Park into T15. They looked like they were doing more than just a run. Later I found out they were running a trail race. I got curious.
I began exploring the trails beside my house. Started googling, watching videos, and learning more about trail running. Inspired by YouTuber Run Uncle Run and an old friend, I set my sights on running an ultra marathon.
I signed up for my first local trail race, and that marked the start of my trail running journey.

I first came across RSH via the XTrailblazersโ UTSG WhatsApp group. A few days after the UTSG race, there was a post about a trail training trip to Gunung Lambak in Malaysia.
At that point, I had done my first overseas trail race in Betong, Thailand. I barely finished it within COT, and it was a rude wake up call for me.
That race exposed gaps in my training. Running in Singapore trails and Bukit Timah Hill was not enough! I realised that if I wanted to level up, I needed more exposure to terrain similar to what I would face in races.
So I signed up for the Lambak trip.
Then another.
And another.
Over time, I found myself joining most of the RSH trips and races, and eventually helping others take their first step into trail running as well.
To me, RSH is a mix of training, adventure, and recovery hike โค๏ธโ๐ฉน. Trail and elevation training no longer feel like something I have to do, but something I genuinely look forward to, especially on Sundays with my trail buddies.
I have many storiesโฆ but some are better shared over beer. ๐
The latest one that stood out was our Trans Titiwangsa V1 hike. It was an attempt to climb the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest peaks in Peninsular Malaysia at one go.
I was hiking with the second group, six of us moving at a slower pace.
We seriously underestimated the challenge. After descending from the second peak (about 14 hours in), we stopped to rest. That was when we told the mountain guide we were thinking of DNF.
He looked at us and said in broken English:
โBaang (Bro), here no escape routeโฆ go back starting trailhead (14h) โฆ go to end trail (15h)... โ
That moment hit hard.
We were already drained. Some of us were running low on water and food. The next water point was still 8 to 10 hours away. We did not expect it to take this long, and we were not fully prepared.
For a while, no one really spoke.
Then somehow, without saying much, we all came to the same decision that
we would finish it together, sharing whatever we had.
I remember lying down on the cold, sandy ground during one of the breaks.
We looked upโฆ and saw one of the most incredible night skies.
In that moment, despite the fatigue and uncertainty, there was this quiet sense of gratitude... and later a loud snoring ensued. ๐
Not everything has to go according to plan. Sometimes, it is about adapting, staying safe, and moving forward together.
That experience stayed with me.
It reminded me that sometimes the most memorable parts are not the peaks or the finishes. It is those unexpected moments, right in the middle of the struggle.

Talk to people.
You will meet many humble veterans generous with knowledge in this community who have done amazing things. Some have climbed Everest, many have hiked mountains and run races all over the world.
You will find role models who are already grandparents, still out there having fun and challenging themselves physically.
Take the opportunity to learn from them. Enjoy the journey and stay curious.
At the same time, respect the mountains. Prepare well, donโt rush, and know your limits. ๐
