Very interesting

In breve:

What the KeYs ITaught Us About Young Rowers 13/05/2026

New on the KeYs blog 🚣
What does science say about keeping young rowers in sport — and injury-free?
We tested 3 clubs, 3 countries, 3 times over 13 months. The results changed how we think about youth training.
Spoiler: the problem was never strength. It was movement.

Did you know that fun is the secret engine of athletic performance? 🚣‍♂️✨

With the KeYs Project (Keeping our Young generation in Sports), we’ve proven that fighting sports dropout among youth isn’t just about discipline—it’s about innovation, variety, and involvement!

Over the past two years, together with our partners in Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia, we’ve transformed the rowing experience:
✅ More Choice for Athletes: From yoga and dodgeball to mountain biking and trekking.
✅ New Challenges: We introduced Coastal Rowing to make training sessions dynamic and spectacular.
✅ International Team Building: From summer camps in Fano to winter adventures in Planica, creating bonds that cross borders.

📈 The results speak for themselves: training attendance has grown steadily, reaching peaks of 64%! By offering flexible pathways (including recreational options), we keep young people close to the sport they love.

🌱 Beyond the Finish Line: As the KeYs project officially nears its conclusion, its legacy is here to stay. The methodologies we’ve developed are now a permanent part of our clubs, and the cooperation between Adriatico Fano, Arupinum, and Piran will continue through future regattas and exchanges.

Together, we are keeping the next generation in motion! 🇪🇺💪

Keeping Our Youth in Motion: Success Stories from the KeYs Project! Have you ever wondered how to keep young athletes motivated when training starts to feel like a repetitive routine? At the KeYs Project, we’ve spent the last few seasons answering that very question across three countries: Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia.

🏆 Coppa Filippi 2026 – Fano, April 18-20

KeYS was at the Coppa Filippi Beach Sprint & Coastal Rowing in Fano, one of the most exciting stops on the Italian Rowing Federation's national circuit!

Our young athletes took on the waves of the Adriatic, experiencing the true spirit of coastal rowing: competition, teamwork, and a deep connection with the sea.

A special shout-out to Alessandro and Beatrice from Club Canottieri Montefeltro, who earned a brilliant 3rd place in the mixed double! 🥉

Moments like these are what KeYS is all about — keeping young people engaged in sport, helping them grow through new challenges, and building connections across borders. Coastal rowing is exactly that: a dynamic, inclusive discipline that inspires the next generation.

Congratulations to all participants and a big thank you to FIC for the outstanding organisation!

🏁 The KeYs journey is complete.

Today we held our final project meeting, presenting the results of everything we've built together over the course of the KeYs – Keeping our Young generation in Sport project.
The numbers and the athletes speak for themselves:
✅ Dropout reduced across partner clubs
✅ Motivation increased among young rowers
✅ Coastal rowing confirmed as an effective tool for motor development
✅ Test battery results show measurable improvement in physical performance
✅ Athletes learned new movement patterns that enhance on-water coordination and reduce the risk of injury

This project brought together rowing clubs from Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy around a shared mission: keeping young athletes in sport through innovation, inclusion, and science-backed training methods. We've shown it works.
Thank you to our consortium, our coaches, our physiotherapists, and — above all — our athletes, for making KeYs more than a project. It's a legacy.

🏋️🚣 Weeks of training. One challenge. Three countries. Zero excuses. 💪

On February 23rd, KeYS athletes took on their first inter-club competition — each team in their own gym, each pushing to the limit at the same time, across borders.

The challenge:
🏃 20m run
🚣 1,000m rowing ergometer (crew changes at 750m, 500m and 250m)
🏃 20m run back

…and the next athlete starts the moment the rower returns and raises their ✋

Different cities. Different clubs. Same energy, same commitment, same drive.

What made this day special? These young athletes competed remotely — each in their own club — yet they felt it: the motivation of knowing others were going just as hard, in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, all part of the same project.

Because that's what KeYS is about. Not just keeping young people in sport — but giving them reasons to stay. A community. A challenge. A team that goes beyond the gym walls. 🌊

This is only the beginning. 🔑

What do the boys tell us about KeYs?

They talk about surprise — discovering that a winter camp can be so engaging, even for those who are not used to snow or mountain environments.
They talk about new experiences, from trekking in the snow to stepping onto the ice, and about learning to face unfamiliar situations with curiosity instead of fear.

They often mention the group: walking together, helping each other, laughing, sharing effort and moments of lightness. Being part of a group made every challenge easier and every moment more meaningful.

There is also a strong sense of personal growth. Not competition, but self-discovery — realizing that stepping out of their comfort zone can be challenging, but also rewarding.

Above all, the boys describe KeYs as a positive, energising experience.
For many of them, it was their first real winter experience, and that made it unforgettable.

KeYs is not just about activities.
It’s about confidence, connection, and discovering new possibilities — together. ❄️💙

A perfect way to close our KeYs Winter Camp ❄️

In the morning, we went trekking through the stunning Tamar Valley, surrounded by snow and winter silence.
The boys enjoyed it immensely — for many of them, it was a rare chance to truly experience the mountains in winter.

After about an hour of walking, we reached the mountain hut, where we took a well-deserved break, shared a group photo, and enjoyed the moment before heading back to the hotel to check out.

After lunch, an unexpected change to the program turned into a highlight: since the ice rink was closed to the public for a curling competition scheduled for Sunday, we had the chance to go ice skating for about an hour — a fun and joyful way to end the camp.

Then it was time to say goodbye and head back towards the sea.

We can say with certainty that the KeYs Winter Camp was a success, especially for the boys — many of whom do not usually ski or spend time in the snow during winter.
Seeing their enthusiasm, curiosity, and smiles made this experience truly meaningful.

KeYs is about discovery, shared experiences, and creating opportunities to step into new environments — together. ❄️💙

KEYS is about stepping forward — together.

Over these days, what truly stands out is not just the activities we are doing, but the mindset behind them.
For the young participants, KeYs represents a chance to slow down, listen to themselves, and experience something different from everyday routines.

They talk about curiosity, about trying new environments and unfamiliar challenges.
They talk about nature, not as a backdrop, but as an active part of the experience — something that demands attention, care, and presence.
They talk about being a group, discovering that shared effort makes challenges lighter and achievements more meaningful.

KeYs is also about stepping out of the comfort zone: walking on icy paths, training in new ways, meeting professionals, testing both body and mind. Not to compete, but to understand themselves better and grow through experience.

Most of all, the boys describe KeYs as an opportunity to build confidence, awareness, and connection — with themselves, with others, and with the environment around them.

This is what KeYs is about:
not performance, but process;
not results, but learning;
not individuals, but a community moving forward together.
