Dance in Africa: Senegal 2023

The DanceInAfrica workshop at the Théâtre de l'Engouement last May was a true moment of sharing and camaraderie. Team spirit was at the heart of every step, every smile, every movement. Together, we danced, encouraged each other and grew, proving that the power of dance lies in our unity.

When bodies dance, eyes meet, and barriers fall. A moment of shared joy where every gesture becomes a bridge to the other, and every breath a silent word. Here, we don’t just dance.

Sitting in a circle is more than just a physical arrangement.

it’s a human posture, a philosophy. In a circle, no one is above, no one is left out. Everyone sees each other, listens and is heard. This shape invites equality, mutual respect, and co-creation. The circle breaks down invisible hierarchies, refocuses attention, and nurtures collective intelligence. Whether we’re learning, sharing, or creating together, the circle reminds us that we are all deeply connected.

Did you know that many people in Guinea are a part of the Mande lineage? Malinke, Manianka, Mandinka and Bambara are some subgroups of the larger Mande ethnic and language group. People of this lineage are found throughout West Africa, including the countries of Senegal, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso and even Mauritania.

We are moving forward with our plans for Dance in Africa Senegal this year from June 11-25 this year!

Here are a few things you should know:
As of now, US travelers are permitted to enter Senegal and are not required to quarantine. Masks are encouraged in public. US travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival. By June, we anticipate that things will likely be the same or better, so we have prepared a program with social distancing in mind.
