Manchester United need two or three new signings this summer to close the gap on Manchester City, says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United are guaranteed to finish in runners-up place behind Pep Guardiola’s side, but are 12 points behind their neighbours in the Premier League table going into the final game of the season.
Solskjaer insists he needs to strengthen his squad to have a chance of competing, warning that improvement won’t happen by itself.
‘We're planning as we normally do,’ he said. ‘It's not like the end of the season and “let’s see what we do”, that's an ongoing process – players who might stay, players who might be leaving, and I hope we're going to strengthen with two or three players.
‘We definitely need to challenge higher up in the table. We’re still too far behind to think that will come by itself.
‘We're not where we aim to be. We've got ambitions to move one place further up, but it's been steady improvement.
‘We've had a few players on loan that might come back in, and there is interest in a few others going out. But you want to come out of the transfer window strengthened, and it might be we allow some players to go out and come back stronger from it. It's difficult to say, I can't see too many outgoings.’
Juan Mata’s future remains unresolved and Solskjaer admitted that a final decision is unlikely to be made until after the season finishes.
‘We're talking to Juan,’ he added. ‘We've had good discussions and that dialogue will continue, let's see what he wants to do at the end of the season.
‘He's such a top professional, it's hard not to play him. There have been circumstances and personal issues that made him less available. That decision will be made after the season is finished.’

TEAM NEWS
United look set to be without Daniel James and Anthony Martial, who missed Thursday's trip to Roma for the Europa League semi-final.
Villa will definitely be without Egypt international Trezeguet, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during the game with Liverpool at Anfield last month. January signing Morgan Sanson is also out with a knee issue. Jack Grealish will not feature either due to a shin problem – the 25-year-old playmaker has missed the last 11 league games, during which Villa have won just 12 points (as opposed to 36 in the 22 matches he did feature in).
FORM GUIDE
United have won five of our last six Premier League fixtures, with the 0-0 draw at Leeds last time out the only blip in that time. The Reds are unbeaten in 24 away games in the top-flight, a club record run which includes last season’s comprehensive 3-0 success at Villa Park. Only Arsenal, with a 27-match sequence between 2003 and 2004, can better our current run and a draw or a win at Villa Park will leave us just one game away from an entire league campaign without defeat on the road, something which has only been achieved three times previously, by the Gunners twice (2001/02 and 2003/04) and Preston, way back in the 19th century.
The home side’s early-season form saw them rank as one of the contenders for a Champions League place at the turn of the year, with Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal all falling to defeat against Dean Smith’s men. Their recent record has been a little patchy, however. As mentioned, Villa beat Everton last time out, but haven’t managed consecutive wins since December. The Midlanders have won three, drawn two and lost four of their nine home league games this year.

I'm delighted with him,” said Ole. “You can see the difference in him when he's worked on his fitness. He's making up for lost time, it looks like.
“He's more than just a goal poacher and good goalscorer. He's played for so long that he has that calmness and composure about him. The flick for the first goal and pass for Mason [Greenwood]'s goal. He's showing his experience. We want the experienced players to step up and he definitely has done.

European Super League: Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal executives step down from Premier League roles

Roma defender Chris Smalling will have mixed feelings as he plays at Old Trafford tonight for the first time in nearly two years.
Having spent a decade at Manchester United - winning five major trophies including two Premier League titles - the place no doubt holds plenty of fond memories for the 31-year-old, but he could be forgiven for wondering what might have been. He may even feel he should still be at the club, and it'll certainly be strange playing front of an empty Stretford End for the first time.
Smalling has endured an injury-hit second season in the Italian capital but returned to fitness last weekend, just in time for the visit to his former club in the Europa League semi-final.

Manchester United have hired two new members of staff to their scouting department who will be in charge of unearthing talent in 'the London area'.
The Red Devils are in the middle of a huge restructuring of their youth academy with a focus on homegrown talent, despite the recent exit of Nicky Butt as the head of first-team development.
Now Manchester Evening News are reporting that United have hired two scouts to look for more homegrown talent in the capital.

Manchester United and Roma will go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Thursday in the first of their two semi-final battles for a spot in the Europa League trophy decider.
United, the chief favorites to lift the trophy, will face a team that are on a run of just one win from their last seven league games.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men haven’t really struggled to get to the semi-finals, as they totally dismantled Real Sociedad in the round of 16 and easily beat Granada in the quarter-finals.
However, the Red Devils have lost the four semis they have played with Solskjaer as manager, so it will be an extra challenge for the former United player, who will try to lift the trophy following 2017's final success under José Mourinho against Ajax.
The English side, who are sitting second in the Premier League table, 10 points behind ‘untouchables’ Manchester City, are unbeaten in their last 17 home games in the Europa League.
Meanwhile, Roma are only in seventh position in the Serie A standings with 55 points (33 matches played, 16 wins, seven draws, 10 losses), 24 points behind leaders Inter Milan.
I Giallorossi got to this stage of the Europa League after defeating Sporting Braga and Ajax, although the Italian side suffered until the last minute to go through against the Dutch team, as they won in the first leg (1-2) and Ajax were close to defeating Roma in the second match (1-1).
Edin Dzeko’s Roma will challenge United and history, as they have won only one of their 17 previous European fixtures in England, losing 10 of those games, including three at Old Trafford. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani will try to make it four on Thursday.
