For the first time in history!
The Olympic flame for the Youth Games will reach the African continent.
Dakar, the capital of Senegal and host city of the first Olympic Games to be held in Africa, will receive the flame on September 12, 2026, after which it will embark on a national tour encompassing all fourteen regions of Senegal.
The schedule for the Olympic flame tour in Senegal begins today, Thursday, September 10, with the lighting ceremony in Athens, Greece, the home of the Olympic flame.
On September 12, the flame will arrive in the capital, Dakar, and from September 14 to 27, it will travel through the regions of Thiès, Louga, Saint-Louis, Matam, Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kafrane, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Kolda, Sédhiou, Ziguinchor, Saly, and Rouiviske.
From September 29 to October 24, the flame will travel through these regions. From October 28 to 30, the torch will return to the capital city of Dakar, and on October 31, the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will take place with the participation of South Sudan.
What is the torch used for?
A metal tube with a handle, the YOG torch features an air and combustion management system designed to keep the flame burning continuously.
The torch will be passed from hand to hand until the YOG Opening Ceremony on 31 October, when it will be used to light the cauldron, marking a defining moment of the Olympic Games. Through this gesture of passing on the torch, it embodies the continuity and the spirit of solidarity and unity of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The torch is undoubtedly one of the most deeply rooted Olympic symbols in the collective imagination. The flame it carries is also a powerful embodiment of the Olympic Values.
The torch relay, introduced in 1936, is one of the most iconic and eagerly anticipated moments for the public in the build-up to the official start of the competition.
The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, houses a permanent collection tracing the history of the Olympic flame, as well as a comprehensive display of Olympic torches produced since 1936. Following the conclusion of Dakar 2026, the YOG torch will be added to the collection and displayed there.

Strengthening Olympic Cooperation 🇸🇸🤝🇪🇬

The President of the South Sudan National Olympic Committee (SSNOC), Choul Laam, alongside South Sudan’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Amb. Kuol Nyok, held a productive meeting with the Secretary General of the Egyptian National Olympic Committee.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two National Olympic Committees, with an emphasis on knowledge sharing, athlete development, capacity building, and creating greater opportunities for collaboration across the Olympic movement.

The delegation also toured the Egyptian Olympic Museum, exploring the country’s rich sporting history and the legacy of its athletes and Olympic movement.

The visit marks another step towards building stronger sporting partnerships across Africa, but particularly Zone V, and creating pathways for South Sudanese athletes and sports federations to learn, grow and compete at the highest level.
