The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) joined the Lobamba Inkhundla Community Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign, hosted by the Ezulwini Town Council in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA), to raise awareness on the interconnected challenges of disaster risk reduction, climate change and waste management.

Speaking during the campaign, EEA Executive Director Mr. Isaac G. Dladla highlighted the environmental and public health risks associated with the open burning of waste. 🔥 Open burning can release harmful pollutants and toxic substances into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and posing risks to human health, ecosystems and the wider environment.

However, waste is not necessarily without value. ♻️ Plastics, paper, metals, glass and other recoverable materials can be reused, recycled or processed into new products, creating opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and community-based economic development.

This reinforces the need to move beyond conventional waste disposal approaches and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy—where waste generation is minimised and resources are recovered and reintegrated into productive activities.

Effective waste management is also an important component of disaster risk reduction. When waste is illegally dumped in open spaces, it can become additional fuel during wildfires, potentially intensifying fires and contributing to the release of harmful pollutants when these materials burn.

Building cleaner communities is therefore about much more than maintaining a neat environment. It is about reducing disaster risks, protecting public health, safeguarding ecosystems and creating economic value from materials that would otherwise become waste.

Today, Eswatini officially launched the Participatory Adaptation for Climate Equity (PACE) Project which is a 36-month initiative supported by the European Union with an investment of €890,000.

At its heart, PACE is about ensuring that climate adaptation starts with the people experiencing climate change firsthand. Through the development of 28 new Local Adaptation Plans (LAPs) across the country, communities will identify the climate risks they face, determine their priorities and help shape solutions that respond to their own realities.

The project will also build the capacity of 30 Civil Society Organisations and build on the 15 Local Adaptation Plans already developed in the Lubombo Region.

Why does this matter?

Because climate change does not affect every community in the same way. A community facing water shortages may need different solutions from one dealing with floods, declining agricultural productivity or ecosystem degradation.

PACE therefore puts local knowledge, community participation and climate equity at the centre of adaptation. Vulnerable households and communities whose livelihoods depend heavily on natural resources must have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their future.

Importantly, these Local Adaptation Plans will not exist in isolation. They will be integrated with existing Chiefdom Development Plans, helping to ensure that climate risks and adaptation priorities become part of broader community development planning.

The project is being implemented by COSPE in partnership with PELUM Eswatini, with collaboration from Government, civil society, communities and development partners.
