Why I Only Settle My Bar Tabs With Australians

I was sitting at the sports pub yesterday, quietly observing the room. You had a table of newly arrived Americans loudly debating their golf handicaps, and a group of British expats endlessly complaining about the current price of a full English breakfast. I just grabbed my pint of Leo and walked straight over to the corner where the Australians were holding court.

Let Uncle Dave give you a brilliant piece of social advice for surviving the local bar scene: Australians are undeniably the best blokes to drink with. They treat sinking cold beers as an official national duty, and they will insult your entire existence with the warmth of a man who has known you since birth.

Back in the UK, if a bloke walks up to you and calls your outfit a complete and utter catastrophe, you are immediately stepping outside to settle things in the car park. Out here in the Kingdom? If an Aussie points out your receding hairline and tells you your favorite linen shirt makes you look like a retired cruise ship entertainer, he is essentially handing you a friendship bracelet and buying the next round. It is an incredibly efficient, highly practical form of male bonding.

The fresh-off-the-boat expats completely misunderstand the culture. They get horribly offended when a bloke from Brisbane affectionately points out their terrible life choices. I just laugh, pull up a plastic chair, and embrace the sheer, unfiltered honesty of the situation.

There is absolutely no complaining about the humidity or whining about the exchange rate at an Australian table. It is just pure, unadulterated dedication to the noble sport of Tuesday afternoon drinking.

So the next time you walk into a neon-lit lounge, find the loudest table in the room, accept the instant verbal abuse as a massive compliment, and try your absolute best to keep up.
