International Whale Shark Day 🦈🌊

The largest fish in the ocean, yet one of its gentlest giants.

Whale sharks travel vast distances through our oceans, reminding us how connected and fragile our marine world really is.

When we meet them underwater, we are visitors in their world. Give them space. Move slowly. Let them choose the distance.

Today, let’s celebrate these gentle giants and support the people working to understand and protect them in Thai waters.

unless you prefer to bring your own.

This baby fish dances so it doesn't get eaten. 🐟

Meet the juvenile harlequin sweetlips — head down, fins flicking, body jerking in this wobbly, erratic dance that looks nothing like normal fish swimming. It's not clumsy. It's a costume.

As it grows, the disguise fades. The bold spots shrink and scatter, the wild swimming smooths out, and it turns into a big, ordinary-looking adult sweetlips on the reef.

So what's it copying? Scientists believe the pattern and undulating motion are modeled on toxic polyclad flatworms — like this Acanthozoon sp. here — animals predators have already learned to leave alone.

Sometimes the safest thing you can be is something else. 🎭

🌊 More Than a Reef, a Home

Beneath the surface, there is a world we rarely stop to notice. Small lives move between the corals, fish search for shelter, and countless creatures grow, feed, and survive together.

To us, it may simply look like a beautiful coral reef. But for them, this is where life happens — where they grow, find shelter, and belong.

When we enter the water, we are entering their world. We are visitors in a place they call home. So slow down, look closer, move gently, and remember to respect the life around you. 💙

At New Heaven Dive School, we believe that every dive is more than just exploring underwater. It’s a chance to understand, appreciate, and protect the ocean we are lucky enough to visit.

Flavocaranx bajad
Fast, powerful, and easy to recognize by its beautiful golden-orange spots.

👁️ Common Bigeye
Priacanthus hamrur
Those big eyes aren’t just for looks — they’re well adapted to lower-light conditions around the reef.

🐆 Leopard Coral Grouper
Plectropomus leopardus
A striking reef predator often spotted around coral and rocky areas, sometimes watching you just as closely as you’re watching them. 👀
