🚨🚨 Why do Tour pros practise their swings in slow motion?🚨🚨
Watch Tommy Fleetwood closely and you’ll often see him doing something that might look strange to the average golfer.
Slow-motion rehearsal swings.
Exaggerated movements.
Training aids.
And sometimes a coach physically assisting the movement to help him find a particular feel.
It isn’t about making the swing look pretty.
It’s about understanding the movement before adding speed.
At full speed, everything happens too quickly. Your brain can easily compensate for a poor movement without you even realising it.
Slow it down and you can actually feel what’s happening:
• How the body starts the downswing
• Pressure and sequencing
• The relationship between the body, arms and club
• Clubface control
• Impact position
• Where the club is travelling
• And, most importantly, the feel you’re trying to create
That’s where coach-assisted drills and training aids can be incredibly useful.
Sometimes you can’t create a new movement simply by being told what to do. You need to experience it.
The coach or training aid helps put your body into the movement, allowing you to recognise the sensation. Then you rehearse it yourself. Gradually, the speed comes back.
Feel first. Speed second.
And here’s the important part…
Amateurs should probably be doing this MORE than Tour pros, not less.
Too many golfers do the opposite.
They stand over a ball, swing at 100%, hit another one, swing at 100% again — and hope a better swing appears.
If you’re trying to change a movement, why practise it at the speed where you can’t feel it?
Take 10–20 balls.
Slow it down.
Exaggerate the movement.
Use a training aid or get some assistance if it helps you find the feel.
Then gradually build the speed while trying to keep that same movement.
Rehearse → Feel → Understand → Add speed → Repeat.
The world’s best players aren’t just practising hitting golf balls.
They’re practising how they move.
And sometimes, the best way to create more speed is to start by taking it away.
