DEMISE OF MR. SURESH KALMADI (FORMER PRESIDENT ASIAN ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION)

06 Jan 2026

It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, former President of the Asian Athletics Association and a respected leader of our sport.

Mr. Kalmadi served as President of the Asian Athletics Association from 2000 to 2013. During this important period, he played a key role in strengthening Asian Athletics and expanding its reach. He was instrumental in introducing major competitions such as the Asian Grand Prix Series, the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships and the Asian All Star Meet, which created valuable opportunities for Asian athletes and helped raise the standard of athletics across our continent.

Mr. Kalmadi was also the Asian Area Representative in World Athletics. Through this role, he worked tirelessly to promote Asian athletics on the global stage and to ensure that the voice of Asia was heard and respected worldwide. Despite his very demanding responsibilities as a Member of Parliament in India and his many public duties, he always made time for athletics and gave his full commitment to serving our sport.

Beyond his official roles, Mr. Kalmadi was a stylish gentleman with a kind personality . He was a pleasure to work with and brought confidence and energy to every meeting and interaction. Many of us will remember him not only as an administrator but also as a warm and engaging individual who deeply believed in the power of sport. Before his long career in public life and sports administration, Mr. Kalmadi served as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. This background reflected his discipline, leadership and dedication to service, qualities that he carried throughout his life and career.

In recognition of his significant contribution to athletics in Asia, he was honoured with the Asian Athletics Association President’s Award on 3 June 2015 marking his years of dedicated leadership and service.

On behalf of Asian Athletics and in my personal capacity, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. The Asian athletics family has lost a former leader, a committed servant of sport and a remarkable personality.

May his soul rest in peace and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations of sports leaders.

With respect and sympathy,
Gen. Dahlan Al Hamad
President
