The El Capitan (originally known as the SS Meriden and later commissioned as the USS Majaba / AG-43) is one of Subic Bay's most famous and accessible wreck dives.
History & Demise
Origins: Built in 1919 in Portland, Oregon, as a commercial cargo freighter, the 90-meter (295-foot) vessel was acquired by the US Navy under charter in early 1942 and renamed the USS Majaba.
WWII Action: It served as a critical cargo and supply vessel during World War II. While supporting operations in Guadalcanal in late 1942, it was struck by a Japanese torpedo amidships on the starboard side. Despite severe damage, it was successfully beached, salvaged, and later utilized as a floating barracks and storage ship in the Solomon Islands.
The Sinking: After the war, the ship was towed to the Philippines. While anchored in Subic Bay waiting to be returned to its original commercial owners, it was struck by a powerful typhoon in July 1946, which caused it to sink along the eastern shoreline.

The HTMS Chang: Thailand’s premier wreck dive with a deck depth at 24m and the tower reaching up to 7m.

Marine Life: Look out for Whale Sharks (seasonal), schooling Batfish, and nudibranchs.

Small Groups: Maximum 4–5 divers per Dive Master for safety and a better experience.

Note: For the HTMS Chang Wreck, an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended, but Open Water divers can explore the shallower sections of the wreck!
