Raising Boys Into Men | Family Rite of Passage Experience with Coach Joe Chan
What does it really mean to raise boys into men with intention?I facilitate Family Rite of Passage Bootcamps for boys age 13 - 19 here in Chiang Mai Thailand...

I’m excited to finally share a glimpse into the Family Rite of Passage Bootcamp here in Chiang Mai — an intimate experience I facilitate for boys and families who want to navigate the transition from boyhood to manhood with greater intention and awareness.
🎥 Watch the video here:
https://youtu.be/DCyhQBVZ0q8
This work is deeply sacred and personal to me.
Not only because I’m a father of two teenage boys myself… but also because I grew up in a family of three boys, and have spent more than two decades working with at-risk youths and families in Singapore.
Over the years, I’ve come to recognise that there are certain foundations in the development of boys that simply cannot be ignored.
These things do not magically fix themselves with age.
They must be worked on intentionally.
And that’s why in my bootcamps, I don’t simply focus on the child alone.
My approach is to involve the parents — especially the father, and in many situations, the mother too — because I don’t believe in merely “fixing problems” for parents.
Many times, the issue isn’t that the child is “broken.”
It’s about understanding the pathway of growth, maturity, identity, belonging, struggle, and transition… and learning how to journey through it together as a family.
Through live coaching, martial arts, shared challenges, reflection, adventure, and conversations in the moment, we create experiences that help families reconnect and better understand what their boys may actually need beneath the surface.
If you’re a parent wondering whether more can be done for your son entering his teenage years… start now.
And even if things already feel difficult, distant, or rebellious at home — it’s not too late.
Reach out anytime.
Happy to support.

🎧 Warrior’s Brew – Part 1: The Map
https://youtu.be/E8UjgqESRy8
“Reset before you react.”
Most people don’t actually have a discipline problem.
They have an inner state problem.
As parents, men, leaders, and even teenagers… there are moments where we react too quickly, shut down completely, or say things we later regret.
Not because we don’t know better.
But because of the state our nervous system is in.
In this latest Warrior’s Brew episode, I speak about something I’ve been observing over and over again while working with boys, men, and families:
Your behaviour often follows your inner state.
When we are connected, we respond clearly.
When we are in survival mode, we fight or flee.
When we are overwhelmed, we shut down and disconnect.
So the real question is not:
“What should I do?”
But:
“Where am I right now?”
In this episode, I also guide listeners through a simple Heart Focused Breathing practice that can help interrupt the stress response and bring the body back into a more grounded and connected state.
This episode may especially resonate with:
* parents raising teenage boys
* men under pressure
* leaders navigating stress
* anyone feeling emotionally reactive or disconnected lately
If this resonates with you — whether as a parent, a man under pressure, or someone navigating stress and emotional overwhelm — feel free to reach out.
I’d love to hear your story and explore how I may be able to support you through coaching, conversations, or the work that I do with men, youth, and families.
Sometimes transformation doesn’t begin with having all the answers.
Sometimes it simply begins with becoming aware of where you are right now.

This is how it used to be.
Men teaching boys.
Not just through words…
but through experience, challenge, and presence.
In many cultures, boys didn’t just “grow up”…
They were guided through a Rite of Passage.
They were tested.
They were stretched.
They were shaped.
And when they returned—
they were no longer boys.
Today, that path is no longer clear.
And many boys are left to figure it out on their own.
This moment here is a glimpse of what we are bringing back.
Together with Coach Sakan Lam, we’re creating spaces where boys can:
⚔️ Learn discipline through the body
⚔️ Face challenge in a safe but real way
⚔️ Be guided by men who have walked the path
🛡️ Rite of Passage Bootcamp (25th - 28th July 2026 | Chiang Mai Thailand)
This is not just training. This is initiation.
If you feel your son is at that stage…
Let’s talk.

Part of the Rite of Passage Family Bootcamp recently was where I conducted family sessions for the family, particularly the parents. In tackling this topic of manhood for the boys, we cannot just "tell" the boys what to do and off they go. The transition from boys to men doesn't just happen by "telling" unfortunately.
But what we do during such family sessions is where we come together in a safe environment where I hold the space for both the boys and parents. And together we come to address this question of "What does it take to become a man?" And I don't hold the answers, I only facilitate the understanding of the boys and parents on this subject.
Perhaps you might be thinking, is there really a need to go through so much trouble and effort for something like this where it's not even a "problem" to be fixed? Shouldn't we spend more time and efforts on other pressing issues like falling grades, lazy behaviors, gaming addictions etc? Why don't we address all these pain points instead?
Well, there goes a fundamental difference in philosophy in that I believe that until we settle the issue of the boy's identity confusion as a young man, all these issues are just the manifestations of who they are inside. Continue to treat them like young boys and you will always have to "parent" them as though they are kids even though they may be growing older day by day.
Today, I don't know where you are at on your journey with your boys but you are definitely not too late in wanting to do this with them!
DM me to find out on the next Rite of Passage Bootcamp! 🔥

Part of the Call to Manhood Family Rite of Passage, we trekked all the way up to the mountain top where we had a clear aerial view of the beauty and nature all around.
Here we reflected on beauty and manhood. Our relationship with things or should I say specifically beauty that attracts us men. And for us men, that would be women.
Talking about our ideas of sexuality and relationships with women, how are we supposed to treat women.
The dad shared his love journey. I shared my love journey. How we met our wives, came together, figured things out and eventually worked things out.
I felt this is an important area because it can be easily the Archilles' Heel of many men. We have seen how so many men, rise and fall because of our relationship with women, sexuality and love.
Today if you have teenage boys back home, the question is not whether they are interested in this topic but its whether anyone is touching on this subject with them. With raging hormones and puberty, there's definitely something to be processed and talked about with them. But are we doing it? If not, why? And if not today, then when?
Yes I know it's not an easy subject to tackle but this is one subject that literally impacts the next and even next next generation. And no house can stand if it's built on sand and gravel.
So choose wisely for yourself today! 💪
