Tyler & Donna bringing Ecstatic Dance to Oakland from Hawaii in 2007 (and creating https://ecstaticdance.org/!) has done so much to contribute to this movement - many fond memories of Sweet's!

SET RECORDING IS LIVE, Ecstatic Dance Oakland, Sweet's Ballroom

Fifty five years of dancing soaked into that floor. You feel it the moment you walk in, and playing to a room with that much history asks something different of you as a DJ.

After the opening contact improvisation workshop we began soft and warm, letting everyone arrive in their own time before the floor found its rhythm, then built through the journey into the peak and eased back down for the landing.

To close the set I dropped Mandla of the Sun, a brand new track I had just finished producing for Michelle Bouvier, played out on that floor before it had been heard anywhere else. Watching a room meet a piece of music for the very first time never gets old.

Deep gratitude to Ecstatic Dance Oakland and Arula for holding this container with so much care, and to everyone who gave themselves to the floor.

Full set now on SoundCloud, link in bio, or comment OAKLAND and I'll DM it to you.
