Thailand is famous for its beaches and clear blue water. But too many tourists were destroying the very thing they came to see.

So the government made a bold choice. They closed parts of Maya Bay in 2018. It had been ruined by mass tourism. Boats dropped anchors, sunscreen washed into the water, and boats stirred up sand. Coral reefs died. Marine life disappeared.

The bay was shut for over three years. No boats. No swimmers. No sunscreen. Slowly, nature healed. Coral began to grow back. Sharks returned. The water cleared.

When it reopened in 2022, the rules were strict. Only a limited number of people could visit, and swimming was banned. It was a difficult decision, but it worked.
