She and her student Fabian spotted a whale shark 🦈 swimming around Phi Phi Island in the Andaman Sea.

What an opportunity. ✨

As divers, we have the privilege of encountering these majestic marine animals, but we also have the responsibility to protect and respect them.

There are a few etiquette guidelines you should follow if you are lucky enough to swim with a whale shark 🦈

• Don’t chase or follow closely. If we stay calm and let them choose their direction, they’re much more likely to circle back or stay in the area.

• Keep a respectful distance. Try to maintain at least 3 to 4 meters from whale sharks and avoid approaching directly from the front or above.

• No tank tapping, please. These sounds can stress sharks and often cause them to leave immediately.

• Move slowly and stay low impact. Gentle finning, good buoyancy, and staying slightly to the side of their path help them feel comfortable.

• Let the shark control the encounter. If they approach divers who are calm and stationary, the interaction is usually much longer and more natural.

When we avoid chasing or crowding, the animals often remain relaxed and may continue feeding or cruising around the site, and may even stick around for a few days.
