GLENO CHAMPIONS DOMINATE NATIONAL SELECTION AS DIM 2026 ATHLETES PREPARE FOR ELITE "QUARANTINE" TRAINING

Dili, Timor-Leste — May 9, 2026

The 2026 Dili International Marathon (DIM) season starts this morning with the National Selection Half-Marathon, held on a newly certified coastal route. The event was formally opened by the Chief of Staff to the President, Henriqueta Maria da Silva, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Forestry and the National Director from the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Art, and Culture. This high-profile start marked a professional turning point for Timorese athletics, utilizing advanced RFID electronic timing to ensure world-class competitive standards for over 200 elite runners.

Athletes from the high-altitude region of Gleno (Ermera) dominated the competition, securing the top spots in both the male and female categories. In the men’s race, Jaqueo de Deus took first place, followed closely by Olympian Felisberto de Deus, while Angela F. de F. Araujo led the women’s field with a spectacular finish. These elite performances validate the Presidency’s strategic vision to leverage Timor-Leste’s unique mountainous geography to develop world-class athletes capable of competing on the global stage.

At the closing ceremony, President of the Republic J. Ramos-Horta personally congratulated the winners and announced a rigorous high-performance plan. The Top 10 finishers from each category, plus two reserves for each gender (24 athletes in total), will be sent to a residential "quarantine" at the Gleno Training Centre. This intensive camp is designed to replicate the successful training models of global powerhouses like Kenya and Ethiopia, ensuring that these selected athletes reach their peak physiological potential before facing international competition in the main marathon this August.

Beyond the race, the event successfully championed the 2026 theme, "Love our forests and wildlife," a message reinforced by the collaboration between sports and forestry officials. This national campaign integrates environmental conservation with athletic excellence as the country prepares to welcome over 7,000 participants for the main Dili International Marathon on August 8, 2026.

Dili International Marathon 2026

Established in 2010 under the patronage of President J. Ramos-Horta, the Dili International Marathon, promotes health, wellness, and tourism by bringing together local and international participants in a celebration of sport and resilience.

The 2026 Marathon, themed “Love Our Forests and Wildlife,” will take place on August 8, 2026, and is expected to attract more than 7,000 participants, including international athletes, amateur runners, and community members across various race categories.

As one of the country's premier sporting events, the Marathon drives tourism, international visibility, and community engagement, while simultaneously promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

The program begins with the National Selection Race on May 9, 2026, in Dili, generating early public engagement. A Gala Dinner with sponsors and partners will be held on August 7, 2026, in Nobre Palace Lahane, providing an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and recognize contributions.

Complementing the Marathon, the DIM EXPO 2026 will take place from August 6 to August 8, 2026, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace. This three-day cultural and environmental festival expands the event into a multi-day national celebration, combining sport with culture, youth participation, and sustainability. Science Summit for Development 2026

The Science Summit for Development 2026 will be held from August 24–25, 2026, at the Dili Convention Center, bringing together more than 25 Nobel Prize laureates, along with world-renowned scientists, policymakers, and innovators.

The Summit will serve as a high-level platform for dialogue on science, technology, and innovation in service of sustainable development, positioning Timor-Leste as an emerging hub for global knowledge exchange.

A Gala Dinner for laureates and special guests will take place on August 23, 2026, at Nobre Palace Lahane, offering an opportunity for high-level interaction and diplomatic engagement.

A Science and Technology Expo will be held alongside the Summit, providing a platform for academics, students, businesses, innovators, and sponsors to present research, technologies and solutions relevant to Timor-Leste's development. The Expo will promote collaboration, knowledge exchange, and partnerships between international experts and local stakeholders.

Following the Summit, participants will take part in organized field visits in Timor-Leste on August 26, 2026, including programs focused on marine biodiversity and conservation on Ataúro Island, as well as mountain agriculture, coffee production, and rural livelihoods in Aileu and Maubisse Municipality. “Natal do Povo” (Christmas with the people) is the celebration brings together the nation's diverse communities in the spirit of unity and social solidarity during the Christmas season.

Natal do Povo commenced with the opening of a Nativity Exhibition, reviving one of the nation's most treasured Christmas traditions. The Nativity Scene, deeply rooted in the Christian faith of the people, is a profound expression of Timor-Leste's spirituality, creativity, and community spirit. Following with the Presidency distributed Christmas gifts to the communities in all the municipalities, including children, widows, people with special needs, patients at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares, detainees, and residents of orphanages and underprivileged communities.

Get ready, Dili! On the saturday morning of May 9, 2026, we kick off the marathon season with the National Selection Half-Marathon. This is your chance to see our national athletes compete for a spot in the main event!

🌊 Experience the NEW Route: We are debuting our internationally certified coastal route! This route is designed to showcase Dili’s stunning coastline while keeping the city moving.

⚠️ IMPORTANT TRAFFIC NOTICE:
To ensure the safety of our 200+ runners, there will be road closures from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM along the coast, starting from the Presidential Palace to Dolog Oan (behind the Cristo Rei Statue). Please plan your travel accordingly and come out to support our athletes!

Bersiaplah, Dili! Pada hari sabtu pagi, tanggal 9 Mei 2026, kita akan memulai musim maraton dengan Seleksi Nasional Half-Marathon. Inilah kesempatan Anda untuk melihat atlet nasional kita bersaing memperebutkan tempat di acara utama!

🌊 Rasakan Rute BARU: Kami memulai debut rute pesisir pantai yang telah tersertifikasi secara internasional! Rute ini dirancang untuk menampilkan keindahan pesisir pantai Dili yang menakjubkan tanpa mengganggu aktivitas kota.

⚠️ PENGUMUMAN LALU LINTAS PENTING:
Untuk menjamin keselamatan lebih dari 200 pelari kita, akan ada penutupan jalan dari pukul 05:00 hingga 09:00 di sepanjang pesisir pantai, mulai dari Istana Kepresidenan hingga ke Dolog Oan (belakang Patung Cristo Rei). Harap rencanakan perjalanan Anda dan datanglah untuk menyemangati para atlet kita!
