The Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries

The Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries(SMIIC), as a sound mechanism for harmonization of standards among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation(OIC) countries and for preparation of new ones, aims at realizing harmonized standards in the Member States and eliminating technical barriers to trade and thus developing the trade among themselves. It shall establish certification and accreditation schemes for the purpose of expediting exchange of materials, manufactured goods and products among Member States beginning with mutual recognition of certificates. The SMIIC also aims at achieving uniformity in metrology, laboratory testing and standardization activities among Member States and ensuring education and training and providing technical assistance to the OIC Members in the domain of standardization and metrology. Hence, the Institute may cooperate with other regional and international organisations interested partially or wholly in standardisation, metrology or related activities.

SMIIC Secretary General Mr. İhsan Övüt welcomed H.E. Tomasz Miśkiewicz, Mufti of Poland, at SMIIC Headquarters in Istanbul. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and advancing halal standardization to serve Muslim communities worldwide.

SMIIC Secretary General Mr. İhsan Övüt attended the 52nd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held on 17–18 October 2026 in Baghdad, Republic of Iraq.

🤝 As an affiliated institution of the OIC, SMIIC is proud to be part of the wider OIC family and to contribute to its shared vision of strengthening cooperation, solidarity and sustainable development among Member States.

The CFM serves as one of the OIC's principal decision-making bodies, providing a platform for Member States to address common challenges and promote coordinated action across the Islamic world.

Through its activities in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment, SMIIC continues to support the OIC's objectives of enhancing economic cooperation, facilitating trade and promoting sustainable development.

🇮🇶 SMIIC Secretary General Pays a Visit to Cosqc.IQ / الجهاز المركزي للتقييس والسيطرة النوعية in Baghdad

On 18 October 2026, SMIIC Secretary General Mr. İhsan Övüt and his delegation visited the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (COSQC), which represents the Republic of Iraq as a member of SMIIC.

The delegation was warmly received by COSQC President Dr. Fayyadh Mohammed Abed.

🤝 The fruitful discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and enhancing COSQC's engagement in SMIIC activities, particularly through joint programmes, capacity-building initiatives, technical collaboration and knowledge exchange.

🔬 The delegation also visited COSQC laboratories and learned about their technical activities and capabilities.

The visit marked another positive step towards closer cooperation and greater engagement within the SMIIC framework.

On the occasion of World Standards Day, I extend my warmest greetings to the global standardization community and to all experts and institutions contributing to the development and implementation of standards.

Standards are a common language that builds trust, supports innovation, facilitates trade, and contributes to a safer, more sustainable and prosperous world. This year’s theme, “Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy,” highlights the important role of standards in supporting efficient, reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

As a treaty-based intergovernmental organization affiliated with the OIC, SMIIC remains committed to strengthening quality infrastructure and international cooperation among our Member States through standardization, metrology and accreditation.

I sincerely thank all our experts, Member States and stakeholders for their valuable contributions and continued cooperation.

I congratulate everyone on World Standards Day and wish the international standardization community continued success in building a better future together.

SMIIC Secretary General H.E. İhsan Övüt participated in the ISO Annual Meeting held in Paris, France from 28 September to 2 October 2026, with SMIIC attending the event as an invited organization.

SMIIC was pleased to take part in this important gathering of the international standardization community and to follow the sessions and the ISO General Assembly.

During the Annual Meeting, H.E. İhsan Övüt also had the opportunity to hold a dedicated meeting with senior ISO officials to discuss the ongoing ISO–SMIIC cooperation process and exchange views on opportunities for further strengthening relations between the two organizations.

SMIIC values its continued engagement with ISO and looks forward to further developing this cooperation for the benefit of the wider standardization community.

SMIIC and UNIDO Successfully Hold Joint Webinar on Quality Infrastructure and SME Access to Finance

The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), successfully organized the webinar entitled:

“Enhancing Industrial Resilience in OIC Member States through QI4SD and SME Access to Finance: Advancing Regional Trade and Global Market Integration”

Held online on 23 September 2026, the webinar brought together distinguished representatives and experts from international organizations, government, development finance institutions, SME development institutions and academia.

The discussions explored the important linkages between quality infrastructure, SME competitiveness, access to finance, industrial resilience, export readiness and integration into regional and international markets. The programme also addressed financing gaps faced by SMEs, Islamic financing solutions, SME readiness for finance and market access, and the role of quality infrastructure in supporting creditworthiness and competitiveness.

The webinar provided a valuable platform for exchanging perspectives, sharing practical experiences and discussing potential areas for further institutional cooperation.

SMIIC extends its sincere appreciation to UNIDO for its close cooperation in jointly organizing the webinar, and to all distinguished speakers and participants for their valuable contributions, insights and active engagement, which contributed greatly to the success of the event.

We look forward to further strengthening cooperation with UNIDO and our partners in support of resilient, competitive and sustainable industries across OIC Member States.

H.E. Mr. Ihsan Övüt, Secretary General of SMIIC, attended the Global Halal Summit (GHaS) 2026 in Putrajaya, Malaysia, and delivered a presentation on strengthening the global halal ecosystem through cooperation and harmonized standards.

The SMIIC (1+1) Project completed its two-part training on strengthening national standardization bodies, led by Ms. Dohana V. Femina from BSN Indonesia (Badan Standardisasi Nasional), with over 30 participants from SMIIC Member States.

The SMIIC (1+1) Project continued with training on temperature and humidity calibration, attended by over 30 participants. Dr. Arfan Sindhu Tistomo from BSN Indonesia (Badan Standardisasi Nasional) covered key calibration methods and practical laboratory recommendations.
