Tarpon Fishing

Tarpon , the common name for members of the family Elopidae, large herring like game fish of the warm seas of the Western Hemisphere, tarpon range occasionally from Long Island to Brazil and to the west coast of Africa and enter freshwater streams freely. We are privileged to have these magnificent sport fish at our finger tips right here in Trinidad. The tarpon's heavy, silvery scales, sometimes used as ornaments, give them the name silver king.

Catch and Release

These incredible fish were made for angling and we should do everything possible to preserve our tarpon fishery for the generations to come. For live bait tarpon fishing circle hooks are the best for releasing tarpon unharmed. Don't let the tarpon run too long with the live bait before setting the hook and try not to fight a tarpon so long that it becomes exhausted. Release tarpon at the side of the boat without lifting them out of the water.

Learning new skills!

How to fillet a fish:

With the knife blade pointing away from you and across the body of the fish, begin to cut toward the head (or at least where the head used to be). Use the backbone to guide your knife. To take the skin off, begin by holding the fillet by the tail, skin side down.

With safety first in mind, kids will learn how to correctly use a knife while being supervised, to carefully fillet a fish like a pro.

Roasting fish and cooking fish broth on d beach are some of the cooking skills kids will have the opportunity to learn while on their water camp adventure. Lunch anyone?

Las Cuevas

Las Cuevas Bay takes the shape of a crescent, and its backing of forestry affords the area protection from harsh winds. This makes for calm, clear waters which have a lovely almost green hue. The sand, meanwhile, is soft and tan. The caves for which the bay is named are located to the southwest, while lifeguards mark daily where it is safest to swim along the eastern edge.

Fishing in Las Cuevas

According to the season and the availability of suitable bait fish, fish can be caught with nets, fish pots and hand lines. A specialty of the fishermen is “a la vive” or live fishing where large fish are taken using a live bait. This requires great skill as the tackle is limited to fine low test nylon lines mounted on a spool. Depending on the time of year you can see Kingfish, Mahi Mahi, Red Snapper, Grouper, Marlin, Swordfish, Tuna and many other varieties.

Water activities
Las Cuevas is an ideal spot for boogie boarding. The water here most times is as calm as a swimming pool, free from dangerous currents and undertow. Swimming and snorkeling can be enjoyed as well!
