Are your periods longer or heavier than normal? According to the CDC, some signs that your flow may be heavier than average are if you:
- Have a menstrual flow that soaks through one or more pads or tampons every hour for several hours in a row.
- Need to double up on pads to control your menstrual flow.
- Need to change pads or tampons during the night.
- Have menstrual periods lasting more than 7 days.
- Have a menstrual flow with blood clots the size of a quarter or larger.
- Have a heavy menstrual flow that keeps you from doing the things you would do normally.
- Have constant pain in the lower part of the stomach during your periods.
- Are tired, lack energy, or are short of breath.

Have you ever thought about how your eating habits can affect your sleep? There is a definite relationship between how we eat and how we sleep. Lack of sleep is linked to a number of unfavorable health consequences including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Sleep disturbances can also exacerbate the symptoms of many mental conditions including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Let's discuss 3 factors that can affect your sleep:
1. Not eating enough throughout the day: If your body regularly isn’t getting enough calories due to undereating or restricting meals this can start affecting your sleep patterns. It may manifest as you falling asleep but cannot sleep longer than 4 hours. Meeting your body’s caloric and nutritional needs and eating adequate protein will promote better sleep.
2. Poor blood sugar regulation: If your blood sugar cannot regulate itself without the input of carbohydrates or is constantly dropping throughout the day, this can lead to waking up throughout the night as your body attempts to bring you out
of this hypoglycemic state. To prevent this, ensure to eat a well balanced dinner or a light snack before bed.
3. Eating too soon before bed: Coughing, nasal drip, or that burning feeling in your throat will disrupt your sleep at night. If you eat foods that trigger your GERD or acid reflux, this will also affect how you sleep. Aim to stop eating at least 3 hours before bedtime.
