In 1872, the standard size and weight of the ball was officially set. Prior to that, the size and weight of the ball were determined before the match agreements of both teams.

In the modern era, the number of players at all levels of football is second only to athletics and ranks first among team sports. The modern history of the soccer ball began in the mid-19th century, when Charles Goodyear developed the first ball made of vulcanized rubber. Seven years later, in 1862, another inventor, Richard Lyndon, created the first inflatable rubber ball chamber. Lyndon later developed a pump for the camera, and at an exhibition in London, his invention won a gold medal in football.

During the First World War, FIFA underwent serious trials, as many players went to the front, and the possibility of international travel for tournaments was very limited. After the war, with Woolfall's death, Dutch President Carl Hirschmann took over the presidency. FIFA was saved from complete collapse, but the price was to withdraw from the organization of all four British associations that did not want to participate in international competitions with their recent enemies.

The first competitions under the auspices of FIFA were held in 1906, although FIFA did not achieve much success in organizing competitions. This fact, combined with a number of economic factors, led to the resignation of Guerin from the presidency and his replacement by Daniel Woolfall of England, which at that time had already become a member of the association. Subsequent competitions under the auspices of FIFA - the football tournament at the 1908 Olympic Games in London were much more successful, although there were some problems associated with the participation of professional footballers in the Olympic Games.
