YHB Interlude|《The Upside-Down Philosopher》

A little interruption today.

While shopping at the supermarket today, I suddenly remembered something rather funny from our four-day practice.

During those four days, it seemed that every movement came with a lesson.

Breath, strength, balance, awareness- almost every movement could become a philosophy class.

And one of the funniest things was this: There was always someone upside down.

Feet off the ground, body somewhere in another world, and yet still talking about philosophy with complete seriousness.

So, quietly in my mind: The Upside-Down Philosopher.

Today, standing in the supermarket, I suddenly had another thought: What if we brought all those lessons into the supermarket?

Wouldn’t that be hilarious?

Imagine this.

Someone pushing a shopping cart :“Feel your core.”
Someone choosing fruit:“Stay present.”
Someone opening their wallet: “What is your relationship with money?”
Someone taking out a credit card : “Stay grounded.”
And finally, at the checkout:“Find your center.”

Meanwhile, the cashier simply looks at you: “Cash or credit card?”

Suddenly, there is no philosophy.

No Saṃskāra.
No alignment.
No awareness.

Just: Wallet.Credit card.Please pay.

I stood there in the supermarket and suddenly thought - life is actually quite funny.

Four days ago, we were on the mat, talking about how to lift the body away from the ground.

Four days later, I was standing in a supermarket, watching everyone seriously put their lives, one item at a time, into their shopping carts.

On one side: Handstand.
On the other: Shopping cart.

One has both feet in the air. The other has both feet firmly on the ground.

Perhaps that was my favorite contrast from the training. We can talk about very profound things.

But eventually, life still asks:“Did you bring your wallet?”

Maybe true grounding isn’t about always staying on the ground. And it isn’t about always being in the air either.

Maybe it is simply knowing when to fly, and when to come back down.

So, you can do your handstand.

But after class, remember your wallet.

The Upside-Down Philosopher.

Chapter 22|《The Body Remembers - Body Language and Memory in a Yoga Journey》

When you practice and teach yoga for many years, you slowly begin to discover something.

The practice leaves its imprint on the body.

What once required conscious effort gradually becomes embodied — a quiet awareness that remains, even when you are no longer practicing every day.

I never realized that this could happen to me.

Especially this year (2026)

I began my yoga practice at Pure Yoga in Hong Kong in 2008, three years after I first arrived in the city in 2005.

Back then, Hong Kong felt almost like a city from the movies I had watched in the past — fascinating, energetic, and somehow larger than life.

Before joining Pure Yoga, I was simply someone who enjoyed fitness at California fitness (World Gym Former incarnation) . I occasionally took yoga classes, without knowing that yoga would eventually become such a long part of my life.

From then on, I found myself moving between TST, Central, and the new studios that seemed to open one after another across Hong Kong.

I loved moving between the different Pure Yoga and Pure Fitness studios, discovering my body through practice while embracing the rhythm of Hong Kong. The city, the people I met along the way, and the life I was slowly building became an inseparable part of that chapter of my life.

Those were precious years.

And without realizing it, those years gave me something much more lasting than a fitness routine.

They gave me a way of living rooted in well-being. I am beginning to understand that the body remembers far more than we think.

Practice leaves a language in the body. And sometimes, the body remembers before the mind does.

To be continued.

Chapter 21|《Returning》重返

For more than six years, I had barely practiced yoga.

After COVID, I almost completely gave up on practice. The passion was gone. So was the drive to continue.

At some point, I decided I needed to return to reality — to earn money, to find a job, any job.

I was even willing to work in a supermarket on weekends, or spend my weekdays in an office, doing whatever work I could find.

I wanted to fill every empty space with work. To keep myself busy. To leave no room for overthinking.

I did not mind working myself to exhaustion, as long as I had no time to think about yoga.

I tried to let yoga go.

For a while, I tried to become someone
who no longer needed yoga. Something I had once loved so deeply, I tried to leave behind.

There were even moments when I wished I had never known yoga at all.

Why?

I still had to figure that out.

Perhaps some questions are not meant to be answered when we first ask them.

Sometimes, we have to return to the place we once left behind — not to repeat the past, but to finally understand why we left.

Six years later, I found myself back on the mat.

Not starting again, but returning to a place that was once familiar and yet no longer the same.

Some things came back earlier than I expected.

The direction of a movement. The rhythm between breath and body. Even the small details I had once practiced over and over again.

They had not disappeared.

They had simply remained in the body —
as a kind of memory that needed no language.

Yoga calls this Saṃskāra: the deeper impressions left behind by experiences repeated over time.

Perhaps this is what long practice leaves us with.

Not simply the ability to perform a posture,
but a way of knowing the body.

Over the years, I had practiced in many different ways.

Some taught precision.
Some discipline.
Some movement.
Some stillness.
Some taught me about strength.

After enough time, they no longer existed as separate practices.

They had blended into the body, becoming a language of its own.

The body carries accents from every practice it has known.

And I have come to understand something else: Long practice is never the work of one teacher alone.

Teachers may guide us, correct us, challenge us, and open a door. But only the student can walk through it.

The years of practice belong to the person
who keeps returning to the mat —
again and again, through discipline, frustration, resistance, and change.

Whatever has remained in my body was not given to me in a single class, or by a single teacher.

It was built through years of showing up.

Perhaps this is what practice really is: an interaction between what we are taught
and what we choose to do with it.

A teacher can offer the path.

But the body remembers the steps we have taken ourselves.

So what remains is not simply what you have practiced. It is how you have practiced.

Six years away from the mat made me realize something I could not have understood before: Leaving the practice does not necessarily mean the practice leaves the body.

Perhaps that is why returning feels different.

You do not return as the person who left.
You return with everything that happened
while you were away.

The body has changed.
Life has changed.
You have changed.

And yet, somewhere beneath all of that, something is still there.

Not waiting for you to become who you used to be. Only waiting to be recognized. Returning is not beginning again.

It is coming back to where you are now.

Chapter 21|《Returning》

Beyond Measure

🌿Because there is nothing left to prove.

Chapter 20|《Beyond Measure》

It is easy to place ourselves on someone else’s scale.

We see someone moving forward, and begin to question our own pace. We see someone’s achievements, and start measuring our own position.

Even with years of practice, we can begin to compare — today’s body with yesterday’s, our practice with someone else’s.

We may believe that comparison makes us better.

Sometimes, it does.

But with time and practice, I have begun to understand: Perhaps what we truly need to move beyond is not a particular posture,
but the mind that is constantly measuring itself.

Every body is different.
Every life carries a different history.
And every journey has its own timing.

Some paths move quickly. Others ask us to walk slowly. So why should every journey
be measured by the same scale?

Some days, we simply sit on the mat.
Some days, we continue practicing.

And sometimes, we do not accomplish anything at all.

No breakthrough.
No new pose.
Nothing particularly remarkable.

And yet, we came. Perhaps that, in itself, is Practice. Practice is not about becoming better every single day.

It is about returning, again and again, to our own mat, to our own body, and to our own life.

A some point, we no longer need to compare. It does not mean we stop growing.

It means we stop allowing someone else’s journey to determine the direction of our own.

When comparison becomes quiet,
we begin to see ourselves more clearly.

Our breath.
Our body.
Our own rhythm.
And who we truly are in this moment.

When we no longer need to prove ourselves, when we no longer need to prove that we are good enough, or worthy in the eyes of others, practice becomes quieter.

We move beyond performance
and return to experience.

We stop asking: Am I better than someone else?

We stop asking: Am I better than who I was before?

And begin to ask: Am I truly here, now?

One day, we may realize: True freedom is not becoming the best version of ourselves.

It is being willing to remain ourselves even without applause, without comparison,
without anyone watching.

We do not need to become anyone else’s version of ourselves. We do not need to prove who we are. We simply continue along our own path.

Quietly.
Honestly.
Again and again.

🌿Because there is nothing left to prove.

Chapter 19|《The Quiet Mind》

Chapter 19|《The Quiet Mind》
Quietness is not the absence of sound.

The city does not become quiet simply because we want it to.

There is conversation in the café, footsteps moving along the street, a phone lighting up, and somewhere in the background, our own thoughts.

Our minds are not meant to be completely silent.

Thoughts will arise.
Emotions will move through us.
Memories will return.
Life will continue to make noise.

Practice does not ask us to shut the world teaches us to change our relationship with what we hear.

A thought appears — we notice it.

An emotion rises — we feel it.

A familiar reaction comes — and perhaps, this time, we pause.

We do not have to follow everything that passes through the mind.

And in that small space between what happens and how we respond, something begins to change.

There is room to choose.

Room to listen without being carried away.
Room to feel without immediately acting.
Room to understand without turning every thought into a conclusion.

Perhaps this is what inner quietness really means.

Not silence.
Not withdrawal.
Not the absence of thought.

But the ability to remain present while life continues to move around us.

The quiet mind is not silent.
It is free.

《Ripples|

Grounding,
Balance,
Practice,

🌿The deepest practice is not to create waves, but to become still enough that every ripple begins with peace.

YHB|Interlude
《Ripples》

Some forms of influence never ask to be seen.

Like a pebble dropped into still water, it never chases the ripples it creates, nor does it need to know how far they travel.

True practice is much the same.

Each day we return to the mat, not to change others, but to return to ourselves.

Grounding gives us roots.
Balance brings us back to our center.
Practice is the quiet choice to return, again and again.

As our inner world becomes steadier, that peace naturally extends into our relationships, our daily lives, and the people whose paths have crossed ours.

Most of the time, we never know how our presence has touched another person.

A conversation.
A class.
A smile.
Even a single photograph may leave a gentle ripple in someone’s life.

The value of practice is never measured by how many people we influence. It is found in the sincerity with which we continue.

There is no need to chase recognition or prove anything.

True practice is not about becoming someone who moves with every wind, but about remaining centered through every season of change.

When the heart is still, the ripples naturally spread outward.

🌿The deepest practitioner simply keeps returning home—to the center within.
The deepest practice is not to create waves, but to become still enough that every ripple begins with peace.

Chapter 18|《Conviction》

Chapter 18|《Conviction》

Practice does not remove life’s challenges.
Instead, it slowly teaches us how to face ourselves with honesty.

Courage is not the absence of fear.

It is the willingness to rise again, even when fear is still present.

Time is more than something that passes. It quietly shapes us through the choices we make each day.

With time, we begin to understand:

Maturity is not about having more. It is about knowing what is worth keeping, and what we can gently let go.

Let go of comparison.
Let go of the need for approval.

Hold on to honesty.
Hold on to kindness.
Hold on to the values that remain, even when no one is watching.

Perhaps the greatest transformation of practice is not in the body, but in the way we meet life.

Because in the end, our lives are shaped not by what we achieve, but by what we choose to remain true to.

Chapter 17|《Beyond the Mat》

Chapter 17|《Beyond the Mat》

Every civilization has its own way of practice.

Some seek wisdom through philosophy.
Some through art.
Some through faith.

Yoga begins with the body, yet quietly leads us toward life itself.

Practice is never merely repetition.

What transforms us is not one extraordinary moment, but the quiet return to ourselves, again and again.

Looking across human civilization, what fascinates me most is not how different cultures are, but how often they arrive at remarkably similar truths.

Michel de Montaigne believed that the purpose of learning is not merely to accumulate knowledge, but to learn how to live.

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali remind us that Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning Union.

True Yoga is more than the union of body and breath. It is the reconnection with ourselves, with others, and with life.

Modern psychology offers a similar insight: lasting transformation begins not only by changing our circumstances, but by changing the way we see them.

Different civilizations.
Different languages.
Yet they all seem to ask the same question:

How do we become more fully human?

After completing five hundred hours of study, I found myself asking a different question.

Not,

“How much more can I learn?”

But,

“Who have these years of practice helped me become?”

True practice is also a quiet clarity.
The clarity to know what is worth a lifetime, and what is only meant to pass by.

One ordinary day, I was walking my dog along a familiar street.

There was no studio. No posture. No lesson to complete. Only a quiet walk and the simple presence of another life.

And in that moment, I finally understood.

🌿The deepest practice is not found on the yoga mat. It is found in the way we live each day.

Chapter 16|《Practice Asana》
The Art of Dialogue

(Yoga Sūtra I.14)

Chapter 16|《Practice Asana》
Asana Is the Art of Dialogue

Some postures stay with us for many years.

They travel quietly through different cities, different seasons, and different chapters of our lives.

At first, we believe we are learning a posture. Only later do we realize that the posture has been teaching us how to live.

Many years ago, I practiced by the sea.

The wind, the sunlight, the tides, and the photographs that remain are merely footnotes to time.

What stayed in my memory was never the posture itself. It was the countless days of returning to the mat.

Years later, I looked at those photographs once more.

It felt as if the person I used to be had quietly met the person I am today.

The posture had never spoken. What endured was the dialogue that never ceased.

A dialogue with the body.

With the breath.
With time.
And with every version of ourselves that life quietly unfolds.

Whenever I travel, I find myself slowing down in old streets. Stone steps become smooth with age. Ancient arches stand in silence.

Nothing feels the need to explain its history, yet everything invites us to become still.

The civilizations we remember are rarely those that sought to impress.

They are those that endured.
Practice is much the same.
The Yoga Sūtras remind us:

🌿“Practice becomes firmly grounded when cultivated for a long time, without interruption, and with sincere devotion.”
— Yoga Sūtra I.14

The value of practice rarely lies in a single breakthrough.

More often, it is the quiet repetition of ordinary days that reshapes our posture, our breath, and the way we encounter the world.

Time has never changed the posture.
Time changes the practitioner.

In the end, what remains is not the posture,
but the person who never stopped practicing.

A Piece of Fried Chicken, and a Lesson in Respect.

Seeing Culture, and Seeing Yoga, Through a Taxi Ride.

如果我們走進義大利,只剩下對起司與火腿的批判;
來到法國,只急著討論奶油是否健康;
抵達日本,卻無法理解生魚片背後的飲食文化;

(Seeing Culture, and Seeing Yoga, Through a Taxi Ride.)

Today, I took my dog to the veterinary clinic.

Like every visit before, she trembled the moment we stepped inside. By the time we left, she rested quietly on my lap, as though she had spent every ounce of courage she possessed.

I hailed a taxi.

As the door closed, the driver turned around and asked, in warm Taiwanese,

“Will your dog be alright? She won’t get carsick, will she?”

It was a familiar kind of Taiwanese courtesy—kind, yet never intrusive.

Before I could answer, another language quietly filled the car.

Not words.
A fragrance.
Freshly fried Taiwanese chicken.
Golden, crisp, seasoned with pepper and a hint of basil.

It was a scent that required no translation.
My dog understood it before I did.

She slowly lifted her head, her nose twitching with great determination, as if life had suddenly become meaningful again.

At that moment, I realized that perhaps smell is the most honest language we possess.

The driver noticed our expressions in the rear-view mirror and smiled.

“I just bought it,” he said. There was no pride in his voice. Only the simple happiness of someone looking forward to dinner.

For the rest of the journey, we spoke about fried chicken.

Which shop served the juiciest one.
Which seasoning was the best.
Which remained delicious even after it had cooled.

Small conversations, perhaps. Yet they dissolved the distance between strangers with remarkable ease.

Years of travelling have taught me that the soul of a culture is rarely found only in museums or monuments.

More often, it lives in the everyday rituals people cherish—a bowl of soup, a morning coffee, or a piece of fried chicken worth waiting in line for.

Food is never merely food.

It carries memory, history, and belonging.
It also reminded me of conversations that often arise within the yoga community.

Some choose vegetarianism or plant-based dishes. Some choose veganism. Others follow different paths.

Every choice deserves respect.

Yet true practice is not measured by convincing others to live as we do. Rather, it is revealed in our ability to enter another culture with humility.

To understand before judging.
To listen before correcting.

If we travel through Italy only to criticize its cheese and cured meats;
arrive in France only to debate whether butter is healthy;
visit Japan without understanding the culture behind a plate of sashimi;
or stand on the streets of Taiwan only to dismiss a piece of fried chicken -

Then perhaps what we fail to understand is not the food itself, but the people who have shaped their lives, memories, and traditions around it.

Every culture has a taste.
Every table tells a story.

And every meal carries something far greater than nutrition: it carries history, identity, and belonging.

The practice of yoga is not confined to a mat, nor is it defined by the labels we place upon our meals.

It is reflected in the way we meet another culture—with curiosity instead of certainty, with humility instead of superiority.

The Yoga Sūtras remind us that practice is the quieting of the fluctuations of the mind- not the cultivation of a stronger ego.

Sometimes, what needs to be relinquished is not a particular food, but the certainty that our own way is the only right one.

As I stepped out of the taxi, the driver carried his dinner, and my dog looked back one last time at the paper bag with unmistakable longing.

I smiled.

Civilization is not always found in grand philosophies.

Sometimes, it is simply found in one person sharing the joy of a meal, and another choosing to respect it.

True yoga is not measured by the food on our plate, but by the respect we bring to another person’s table.
