This class incorporates elements of yoga, including warm-up and cool-down exercises. The first thing students learn is the traditional opening salutation. After offering a prayer to Mother Earth, students begin learning the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam, including basic body movements, posture, walking techniques, and foundational steps.
Alongside step practice, students are gradually introduced to rhythm exercises, the basics of South Indian music, and the use of mudras (hand gestures). Through enjoyable and structured lessons, students build a strong foundation in Bharatanatyam.
Students who have completed the foundational training will gradually begin learning repertoire pieces. As they progress, they will move beyond step combinations and begin studying compositions with deeper narrative and expressive content.
Students will learn the meanings of song lyrics, the stories and mythology behind the compositions, and the art of emotional expression. Through facial expressions, body language, and hand gestures, they will develop the skills needed to communicate stories and emotions through dance.
As in the beginner class, students will continue to deepen their understanding of rhythm and South Indian music. While the material becomes more complex, a solid foundation will make the learning process enjoyable and accessible. Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the pieces they perform and learn to interpret them from multiple perspectives.
Classes are open to students of all levels, from complete beginners to experienced dancers. Instruction is tailored to each student's level and learning pace, creating a supportive environment for everyone to grow and enjoy the art of Bharatanatyam.evening, weekend, kids class is available upon request.
Classes are conducted by Erina Kasai, who received her Bharatanatyam training at Bharatakalanjali and Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, India.
