Great video from REAL ELVIS DERRY showing the journey of the African Scorpions RFC before they played their first match in 31 years! NGE Maendeleo is proud to sponsor and be associated with the team. The African Scorpions RFC are currently registered and based in Zanzibar, Tanzania but originally started in Dodoma, Tanzania.
An invitation touring side. The idea was first put forward by W.K.L. Ken Thomas who also became the club's first captain and chairman. With marginal rainfall, rocky outcrops, thorny scrub and dry sandy soil, Dodoma is an ideal habitat for the scorpions after which the club is named, but a less suitable place to play rugby is hard to imagine.
The touring element drifted almost immediately into obscurity and the club eventually became based in Kenya as rugby in Tanzania dwindled during the 1970s.
The African Scorpions RFC original aim was to play and foster the playing of rugby football of the best possible type and to insist upon the highest standards of discipline and behaviour, both on and off the field, picking the best players from East Africa.
Please see (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorpions_RFC).
The Team played its last game over 31 years ago, but after much determination from a group of eager volunteers the Team once again took the field June 1st 2023 beating a Welsh Touring side Bryncethin RFC at Mao Zedong Stadium 38 - 5.
The African Scorpions RFC selected players from over 8 African nations, with hopes of increasing this number to break Guinness World Records in the coming years, inviting players from every African nations registered to Rugby Afrique.

We hope you enjoy the video as much as we did.
