ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ 8. Beer Mile
β
Thereβs no doubt that thereβs an art to running a beer mile. The rules are simple enough: run a quarter mile, drink a brew, then repeat for three more laps around the track. But between nailing the fast-chug, learning to run comfortably with a belly full of liquid, and, well, holding your alcohol, the feat is much easier said than done.
β
Take a peek at the official Beer Mile website, and youβll find thousands of records divided up by country, state, age group, and brand of beer (the most popular brew is Budweiser, with 3,550 results listed as of this writing). In the top all-time performance list, Corey Bellemore of Canada has the menβs record, 4:33.6, which he ran in 2017 drinking Flying Monkey beer. Michigan native Erin OβMara set the womenβs record, 6:08, in 2015, with Bud Light Platinum. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ ππ¨ 7. Empire State Building (86 flights/1,576 steps π±) Remember when your coach asked you to run stadium steps at track practice? They certainly seemed endless. Now imagine you have to run up all 86 floors of the Empire State Building as fast as you can, and suddenly that stadium doesnβt seem so bad.
The Empire State Building Run-Up, held every year in May, is one of the most famous and competitive of the tower races held around the country (other races take place at Chicagoβs Willis/Sears Tower and the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington). Participants start at the base of the iconic tower in Manhattan and race up 1,576 steps to the top, covering approximately one-fifth of a vertical mile.
Australiaβs Paul Crake holds the menβs record for the fastest run up the buildingβin 2003, he climbed it in 9 minutes and 33 seconds, becoming the only runner whoβs ever broken 10 minutes in the event. Sadly, in 2006, the talented runner suffered a major cycling accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. On the womenβs side, Austrian marathon record holder Andrea Mayr has the fastest time up Empire State, an 11:23 she ran in 2006. ππ! πππΌ β‘ππ₯π πͺπ π€π½ Special thanks to πππΌββοΈ _ for sharing this amazing photo with usπ βοΈWanna see your picture or video on our account?! ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ 6. Worldβs Longest Race
β
Every June, ultrarunners in Queens, New York, begin the worldβs longest certified road race: the Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race, an ultra-endurance event established in 1987 by meditation guru and distance runner Sri Chinmoy. Participants must complete the whopping distance over the course of 52 days. The craziest part? The race is run entirely on a half-mile long loop along an extended city block in Jamaica, New York. To finish the run, participants must complete 5,649 laps on the sidewalk.
β
Obviously, Self-Transcendence is not for the faint of heart. On the eventβs website, race director Rupantar LaRusso writes, βThe serious athlete must have tremendous courage, physical stamina, concentration and the capacity to endure fatigue, boredom, and minor injuries.β
β
Finnish ultramarathoner Ashprihanal Pekka Aalto has the record for completing the distance the fastestβhe finished the 3,100 miles in 40 days, nine hours, six minutes, and 21 seconds in 2015, averaging around 77 miles per day. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ π 5. Underwater Marathon
β
For all you injured folks out there, donβt fretβyou still have a chance at cracking a world running record. It just happens to be on an underwater treadmill.
β
In 2012, Mike Studer, the president of Oregonβs Northwest Rehabilitation Associates Inc., set the record for longestβand fastestβdistance run underwater when he ran 26.2 miles in 3:44:52 on an underwater treadmill in Salem, Oregon. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ π 10 Weird Records in Running That Are Super Impressive
β
Yep, weβll pass on running a marathon in high heels.
β
Here at Wereo sport, we spend a lot of our time poring over race resultsβespecially when those times are world records. But most of the best times we write about are in standard events, such as the marathon or if a new American record is set on the track.
β
Then there are the more, shall we say, weird running records. While itβs harder to keep a close an eye on who can sprint up the Empire State Building the fastest or whoβs owning the global beer mile scene, we still see these moments as worth writing about.
β
Here, weβve rounded up some of the strangest, most unique records in running, many of which are as impressive as they are kooky. (Do you have a record youβre enthralled by? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of the page.) ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ π 4. Backward Marathon
β
While running backward, or βretro running,β certainly has its meritsβit can strengthen muscles that usually go unused in our legsβmost of us turn around pretty quickly. Thatβs not the case for Xu Zhenjun, who ran the entire 2004 Beijing International Marathon backward and finished in 3:43:39, setting the Guinness World Record for the fastest backwards marathon for men (according to the World Records for Backward Running database, two other men, Achim Aretz and Markus JΓΌrgens, have run faster times, but these arenβt recognized by Guinness). According to the site, Kathryn Clewley holds the record for women, a 4:26:06 she ran in Hamilton, Canada, in 2017. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ π 2. Indoor Marathon
β
While running 26.2 miles over ground is certainly better than doing them on a treadmill, when youβre running on a 200-meter indoor trackβmeaning you have to go 211 laps to complete a marathonβthe task seems just as daunting. Every spring, The Armory indoor track in Upper Manhattan hosts an indoor marathon championship, where a field of around 100 runners steadily tick off their laps with the hopes of nabbing a world record in the quirky event.
β
Last year, both the menβs and womenβs official indoor marathon records were set at The Armory. Malcolm Richards, an elementary school teacher from San Francisco who holds a 2:13:29 outdoor marathon PR, won the race in 2:19:01. Championing for women was Lindsey Scherf, a 2:32:19 marathoner from New York who ran 2:40:55 indoors. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½

ππ»ββοΈπ¨ πββοΈπ¨ π Compared to the rest of the feats on this list "10 Weird Records in Running", running a half or full marathon on a treadmill isnβt too hard to wrap our heads around. After all, many of us have been forced at some point to complete our long runs on the βmill when bad conditions or other responsibilities keep us inside.
β
According to the Treadmill Running Records database, the menβs world record for running a marathon on a treadmill is held by Eric Blake, a 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier who, in 2006, ran 26.2 miles in 2:21:40 on a Malibu Fitness gym treadmill in Connecticut.
β
Tyler Andrews, a 2:16:59 marathoner from Concord, Massachusetts, holds the record for fastest half marathon on the βmill, a 1:03:38 he ran at the Boston Marathon Expo in 2015. For women, Jenna Wrieden, a North Carolina cross-country coach, holds the half marathon treadmill record of 1:20:43, which she also set at the same Boston Expo in 2014. Currently, there is no official womenβs treadmill marathon record. ππ! πππΌ β‘οΈππ₯π πͺπ π€π½
