The father of modern surfing is Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968), an Olympic swimmer who founded the first surf club on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.

Kelly Slater holds the record for the highest annual earnings among surfers. In 2009, he earned $3 million. Kelly is the most successful surf champion in the world.

The Hawaiians called surfing "he'enalu", which means "gliding on the waves." Surfing for the Hawaiians has been a central part of their culture and religion. Riding the waves not only had a deep spiritual meaning for them and connected them to the ocean, but it was also a way for the leaders to prove their superiority.

Researchers believe that surfing continues to be popular because it is a challenge to modern society and the pursuit of pure pleasure and eternal youth.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest number of surfers who simultaneously climbed onto the same board is 47 people.

The invention of the wetsuit helped surfers surf all year round and practice in cold water for longer periods. Captain James Cook was the first person to describe surfing.

Surfing is a water sport in which a person rides on the front or bottom of a moving wave, which usually moves towards the shore. Surfable waves are mostly found in the ocean and sea, but can be found in lakes or rivers as a "standing wave" or tidal wave.
However, surfers can also use artificial waves created by a boat (wakesurfing) as well as waves created in special artificial surf pools.
