At that time, Abyssinian cats had very different colors. There is an opinion that the first Abyssinian cats were mostly silver in color with the remains of a pattern in the form of stripes. Some of the first officially registered Abyssinians were named Aluminum, Quicksilver, Silver Memelik, Silver Fairy and Salt.

The first cats of the Abyssinian breed were shown at an exhibition in 1871 in the Crystal Palace near London. Back then, cats had tabby stripes on their limbs, but over time, breeders got rid of this trait in their appearance. Also, until the 1900s, cats of this breed had noticeable tassels on their ears, which enhanced their exoticism.

Another version of the origin of Abyssinian cats is the version that they were obtained by crossing European short-haired tabby cats, very common in England, with cats brought from Ethiopia of aboriginal wild colors. Probably, such crossings were started as early as the 1800s.
