Dear Friends,

FEMRITE, Uganda Women Writers Association, with deep sorrow mourns the passing of Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut who was fondly called Mother-hen.

Hon Karooro, who Founded FEMRITE in 1995, has been the pillar of women writing in Uganda and beyond. Despite her political career, Hon Karooro kept close ties with the organization she founded and always checked in to ensure all was well, with both members and the organisation.

She will forever be remembered for her role in bringing together all women interested in writing, and showing them the way of working together and supporting one another. Under her mentorship, the organization grew from strength to strength, with members winning several writing prizes at national and international level.

We commiserate with her dear family and appreciate their role in supporting her to be the best version of herself.

Although she will be dearly missed, her legacy will remain etched in Uganda and Africa’s literary culture, through the numerous writing projects she accomplished as a novelist, playwright, short story writer, and newspaper columnist.

We celebrate her life, and pledge to keep Uganda’s writing candle burning.

Rest well, Mother
