Hey Matchbox Family: Coach Smith just emailed you a video with an update and a team challenge! Go check it out or DM us for the link!

At this point in our season 313 athletes should be in our gym this week, so we have posted 313 hearts in the windows to remind you that we LOVE and MISS each and every one of you!

Stay safe and healthy and we are counting down the days when we can all walk through the doors and play together once again. ❤️❤️

We agree with Adrenaline, Josi is ALWAYS the most positive player in our gym! #MBProud

During this time, we’re so lucky to have incredible athletes that shine bright. Here are a few athletes that sure brighten our day, hope they’ll do the same for you!
Josi Stevens: Josi of Pierre has always impressed us with her positivity and dedication to the sport. We love the way she approaches every opportunity!
Olivia Kieffer: Olivia is truly a bright spot on any team she is a part of. Her athleticism combined with her contagious attitude makes for an incredible player!

❤️ Chesney, you brighten our day too! ❤️

During this time, we’re so lucky to have incredible athletes that shine bright. Here are a few athletes that sure brighten our day, hope they’ll do the same for you!
Brogan Beck: Brogan has been ON lately. Our social media MVP, she’s not letting the current ‘pause’ keep her from positivity and LOTS of Adrenaline Volleyball content 😉
Chesney Oliver: Chesney is a baller that has been on our radar for awhile. This Ipswich tiger makes for a great leader and a competitive player.
Mya Vandrovec: Has anyone seen this girl frown? We DIG Mya’s positivity as her volleyball skills continue to improve each time we watch her.

Yep! Izzy is a fighter! 💪 #MBProud

During this time, we’re so lucky to have incredible athletes that shine bright. Here are a few athletes that sure brighten our day, hope they’ll do the same for you!
Isabel Aesoph: the Faulkton Area setter has that FIGHTER mentality, unafraid in any battle, and was a huge part in their State Tournament run.
Peyton Fischer: the Warner DS/S moved into a new role last season (after winning a State Championship in 2018) and never looked back. Her motto and biggest motivation is being the best she can be for HER TEAM.
Abby Pierce: the Rapid City Christian roster is full of positive athletes, but Pierce even sticks out amongst them. Her ever evolving role shows us that she’s willing to do anything for her Comet squad.

We ❤️ Joclyn Haven! #MBProud

Here are three awesome athletes that sure brighten our day, hoping they can do the same for you! Every day this week we’ll be acknowledging a few positive volley ballers AND people!!
Ashtyn Abraham- a positive competitor. An outside hitter from Hamlin, Ashtyn takes every opportunity she gets to COMPETE. Playing for EAVC this spring, we cannot wait to see a TON of her this summer, at the Future 50 and COMPETE camps.
Joclyn Haven- the communicator.
State Champion defensive specialist from Northwestern, Joclyn continues to impress us with her confidence on the court. The Matchbox club player is a huge part of whatever team she is on.
Tenley Buddenhagen- a grateful attitude.
Undersized Huron settee, Tenley is used to the grind. She competed for we home Huron Volleyball Club, and is grateful and positive with every opportunity she gets.

Our Game: COVID-19

by Kathy DeBoer, AVCA Executive Director

Last week, AVCA High School Board Representative Nancy Dorsey told me her family was scheduled to go to Disney World during their spring break. The theme park had just been closed due to the COVID-19 emergency: “My seven-year-old doesn’t agree, but this is a first-world crisis,” she said to me. “We are safe, and we are healthy. Not being able to go to Disney World is disappointing, not a catastrophe.”

I needed to hear her perspective. The men’s season, the beach season, the girls’ club season, and the boys’ high school seasons had all been suspended or cancelled. I’m not equating the loss of a volleyball season with a trip to Disney World, but I am saying disappointment and catastrophe are not the same when the world is facing a pandemic.

Are these suspensions and cancellations an over-reaction? We will only know in hindsight. Are young, fit, healthy people i.e. those playing men’s, beach, club, and high school volleyball at serious risk even if they get COVID-19? We don’t know for sure, but they all have grandparents, know someone with cancer, diabetes or heart disease, or have a family member who works in healthcare.

As this health crisis unfolds, I’d rather be surrounded by volleyball coaches than anyone else. We practice adapting for a living, whether that’s a mid-match injury, the loss of a top prospect, an unexpected transfer, a key staff departure, or administrative leadership change; all of these are not “if’s” but “when’s.”

Beyond that, our competitiveness fuels our creativity – we’ll find ways to stay connected to our teams and keep them motivated, we’ll somehow continue engaging with prospects and evaluating their skills, we’ll discover new methods to coach and keep improving our craft.

The main reason, though, is because ours is a sport of interconnectedness and interdependence. We can show our workplaces, our communities, our neighborhoods what this looks like: what it means to be family with those unrelated to us, why supporting weaker teammates makes us stronger, when to sacrifice for the good of the group, and how stress gives us the opportunity to be our best selves.

We practice and teach this every day, now it’s GAME ON!

UPDATE: All events at Matchbox through April 4th are cancelled or postponed! This includes practices, tournaments, ClubLite, Minis Sessions, and Private Lessons. Take a break. Wash your hands. And for the love of all humanity, please wash your kneepads!

Today Gracelyn celebrated her 6th birthday with her Matchbox Mini friends!
Happy Birthday Gracelyn! ❤️🎂

What data do you use to manage in-game coaching decisions?

Alexz Smith from Matchbox Volleyball Club (SD) shares how she tracks solely the result of each play to provide quick and meaningful data to manage mid-game decision making.

Coach Smith uses a points scoring sheet to gather set data with the purpose of making mid-set changes to playing personnel, defensive positioning, offensive strategy, or player focus.

Read more and watch her video which explains it step by step! Plus, print your own scoring sheet to use at the next tournament.

Matchbox Sport Recreation Center

Matchbox Sport Recreation Center is a private athletic facility specializing in volleyball training & events. The facility is home to Matchbox Volleyball Club, one of the largest volleyball clubs in South Dakota, as well as camps, clinics, private lessons, and tournaments for a variety of indoor athletic programs.

WHY THE NAME MATCHBOX? Because the facility is a “box” where “matches” are played. Don’t overthink it.

P.S. No, it’s not a franchise. Locally owned & operated. Think of it like a mom & pop restaurant, but instead of serving hot beef combos, we serve volleyballs.

WHAT IS MATCHBOX VOLLEYBALL CLUB? Club volleyball is a volleyball season (separate from the high school season) that nationally runs January through June. Teams are comprised of athletes from all schools within 150 mile radius of Aberdeen, and these teams compete in tournaments around the Aberdeen area and throughout the midwest; and our national teams even compete throughout the country! Our club teams are coached by area high school coaches and collegiate athletes, and we place great emphasis on providing our athletes with a positive and beneficial athletic EXPERIENCE. In addition to the experience that players gain, they also get sweet gear- our club is sponsored by Adidas, so there is no shortage of swag in our gym.

Matchbox Volleyball Club started in 2018 with 18 girls teams and grew to 25 girls teams (230 athletes) for the 2019 season. We host athletes starting at age 8 in our Matchbox ClubLite (10s) program through age 18 (18s division), with the most popular program being our Spring 16s division which starts in March. Matchbox Volleyball Club offers different team options (Practice, Local, Regional, National) all with different financial, time, and travel requirements, in the hopes we can serve all athletes who love to play volleyball.

And not to forget, we will host our first BOYS season of club volleyball the Fall of 2019. Yes, BOYS. Google it. It’s awesome.

Want to join the club? Visit for more info. Tryouts are held in November. Tryout registration opens in September.

WHAT ABOUT LITTLE KIDS OR ADULTS? Yes, we love you too! We host several youth clinics and camps throughout the year. And for adults, we will host a full schedule of tournaments (6s, 4s, doubles, ladder, coed, mens, womens, etc) starting Fall 2019. This place is home to ALL volleyball lovers!

WHO RUNS THIS PLACE ANYWAYS? Hey Peeps! I’m Alexz! Matchbox is my brain-child. I created Matchbox as a way to serve my community with the gifts and abilities that God gave me. I have spent the greater part of my life playing and coaching volleyball and I can’t think of a greater vehicle to impact lives than through this sport. I have a master’s degree in coaching & sport performance from Northern State University and I have been coaching at the high school and club level for the last 12 years. As a coach and a player combined I have been a part of four high school state championships and two runners-up championships and taken two club teams to the national club tournament in Orlando Florida most recently finishing in the top 25% of teams in the nation.

Outside of the gym, I have degrees in Professional Accountancy and Business Management from Dakota State University (Go Trojans!). I like to say I was an accountant in a “former life”, but I still find myself emerged in financial statements and tax returns at Matchbox. I have led a unique professional life of business, technology, and athletics, which has so perfectly prepared me to develop our Matchbox programs. I have the BEST job in the world, hands down.

But, there is no way Matchbox is run by just one person. I have over TWENTY talented, dedicated, kind-hearted coaches in our Matchbox program who all believe in the development of athletes in our community. All these coaches bring unique experiences and talents to our program which is a huge benefit to our athletes. I strive to create positive athletic experiences for all the athletes that enter our gym, and a diverse staff is key to providing such an experience in small-town South Dakota.

If you or someone you know wants to be a part of the Matchbox Family as a player, coach, sponsor or volunteer please email me at [email protected]. We would love to get to know you and all you have to offer this wonderful community we call home!
