Wishbone and Pooh were clearly watching Kentucky three day because they blasted around today’s xc course. 🦄 Calvin had a good day with some green moments but overall a great success! So proud of pony Wishbone feeling so grown up and jumping tons of novice jumps! Extremely proud of Amber and Pooh being the cutest team + putting in the work. 👏
Thank you Mid America for hosting with all the crazy weather. We appreciate the hard work and effort. ❤️

Wishbone’s Aiken Adventures 🤠

03/13/2026

Today Wishbone felt ready more than ever for his next adventure. He got his changes both directions with over a week off. He was the best boy, kick he canters, touch the reins he puts his head down. Producing a horse, especially a kids horse, takes so much time, money, effort and today it all felt worth it. The good, the bad, the ugly, the tears, the smiles, the doubt… when you get a day like today it sure pays off. I feel like I’ve given him the tools he needs to be successful in this world. I see a bright future in between his white and brown ears. 🤍🤎🦴

Wishbone will soon be headed to Aiken! I would consider leasing him to the right program and rider.
Wishbone is a 5 year old gelding, 14.2 h Mustang Cross (unbranded.) He recently moved up to Beginner Novice and placed 4th at his first USEA BN Event. He is a super game pony the answer is always, “yes”. He’s the type of pony that puts himself on the bit and loves to get to work. If you can’t tell from the video he’s pretty awesome and safe. He is 5 and impressionable so a good program and rider is a must. I have SO much fun with him, I feel like a little kid and can’t stop smiling when I ride him. Wishbone is very uncomplicated to ride and extremely light in the bridle, point him at a jump and he’s going no matter what distance you get him to.
He holds his own against the fancy Warmbloods and the judges absolutely love him. Barefoot and UTD coggins/shots/teeth. We will be in Aiken SC 1/19-1/31.

The Stretch

A horse that is being worked correctly will offer you a stretch any time you ask for it. When the horse is ridden forward into the hand — from back to front — the energy flows through the body in a soft, elastic way. In this state of true “throughness,” the horse trusts the contact and uses it for guidance rather than resisting it.

So when you allow your hands to gently melt forward, the horse can take the reins from your hand and lengthen its topline. The result is a beautiful, forward, downward stretch — not collapsing onto the forehand, but reaching into the contact with relaxation, swing, and harmony.

This stretch is one of the clearest signs that your training is on the right path. It shows that the horse feels safe, connected, and willing to stay with you… even when the reins begin to disappear.

“Most horses don’t rush because they’re keen.
They rush because nobody showed them how to wait.”

Rushing is often misunderstood.

People say:
“He loves jumping.”
“He’s just enthusiastic.”
“He gets excited.”

But most rushing isn’t excitement.
It’s lack of education.

The horse hasn’t been taught that waiting is an option.

If every time he goes forward nothing asks him to rebalance…
if every approach feels like “go and hope”…
if slowing down only ever means pulling…

Then the horse does the only thing he knows how to do:
he runs.

Waiting is not natural for a horse.
It has to be taught.

Waiting means:
– staying in the same rhythm
– keeping the balance uphill
– listening even when energy increases
– trusting that the rider will organise the moment

When a horse learns how to wait, rushing disappears on its own.
Not because you stop him —
but because he finally understands how to carry himself.

That’s why I spend so much time on simple things:
short transitions
changes of gear
clear moments of “go” and “wait”
and immediate releases when the horse responds

Rushing isn’t solved at the fence.
It’s solved in the preparation.

Teach the horse how to wait,
and suddenly everything feels calmer, lighter, and more controllable.

💬 Does your horse rush more from excitement or from tension?
