💥💥What attracted you to Reach Athletics?

I had heard of CrossFit, and I was looking for a gym. Reach is the closest gym to my house. I stopped by to inquire and was told to do 20 burpees! I signed up that day.

💥💥Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?

Always @ 5.30 am, maybe 7.00 on Saturday

💥💥Name a favorite movie, and why?

The English Patient – It is a love story that describes the paradoxes of life and the tensions of choice between virtue and passion. I am not sure whether I am in love with Kirstin Scott Thomas or Katherine Clifton.

💥💥What do you do for work?

I am a minister and Executive Director of the Outdoor Church. The Church ministers to the unhoused and low - income population in Cambridge, MA. And I am a doctoral student in Theology at Boston University.

💥💥What would be your dream job?

I am living into my dream job.

💥💥What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

The Reach nutrition program weaned me of ice cream; however, if I did eat ice cream, it would be pistachio.

💥💥What are your hobbies outside of the gym?

Motorcycle enthusiast, hiking, reading theology.

💥💥What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining Reach Athletics?

I came to Reach to train my body. I ended up training my mind. I suggest having an open mind and lean into the program. You might find yourself doing things that could never have been imagined.

The successes just keep on coming! Excellent work Sumant! You are investing in your health and are setting such a great example for your family! We are very proud of you!

We do tough things and we do them together. Our community is what sets us apart and makes the right decision the easy decision.

Fitness provides a hedge for our physical and mental health. When things get tough we can lean on the strength we have built to prepare us for tough times.

I have been Crossfiting for almost 10 years. I have had my ups and downs mentally and physically but I keep coming back to this sport! There is nothing else like it. I was looking for a bit of a change and found myself at REACH. I feel like I have a fresh start! New people and new coaches! I am still at it and loving it for so many different reasons. I was a member for a brief time back when Robby was coaching in the small building behind us and I am glad to be back.

💥💥What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?
The Snatch! Absolutely!

💥💥 Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?

9:30 for sure! Me and John Webber have been hanging mid-morning for years!

💥💥 What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Probably one of my competitions a few years ago. I did a legless rope climb and even surprised myself. My partner and I made it to the finals!

💥💥 What type of music do you enjoy working out to?

Music...is there music when we are working out? LOL
I'm usually happy with anything but I kinda like Eminem, Nelly… any 2000 rap/hip hop

💥💥 Name a favorite movie and why?

So hard!

It was a little mind blowing seeing my first Quinten Tarintino movie.

💥💥 Where is your favorite vacation destination?

California! It's such a beautiful coast line with so much to see. We used to live there so we love to go back for a visit and to see old friends.

I feel lucky because I really love my job. I think just adding the ability to travel around the world and do what I do would be perfect!

Skiing, walking my dog. Well I also have many hobbies that I dream of having time for link hiking, yoga and reading. Good news is I have new hiking boots lots of books and a yoga mat just waiting for me! Life is busy but I'll get there some day.

Right down the street in Burlington MA! Went to school with Amy Pohler and shopped in the Burlington mall before it was cool.

💥💥 What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining Reach Athletics?

You will not regret it! Crossfit is humbling and encouraging all at once. It teaches you to work hard and then keep working hard. You will never be the best but you can be “your best”. There is nothing better then finishing a good WOD with friends! Glad to meet so many new Crossfit friends at REACH!

💥💥What attracted you to Reach Athletics?

I first joined the Reach family when it was Robby and Dan doing TNT Bootcamp classes upstairs in the office building. Our friends Karen and Brad Martin were members so Susan and I bought Groupons to give it a try and loved it. Dan says that makes me an OG. A year later Robby told us all he was moving us down to the garage and changing the format to this thing called "CrossFit" where we'd get to use barbells and have a real rig. I was intrigued and remember helping carry the kettlebells down on moving day. It was a tight squeeze in that space, but I was addicted to CrossFit from day one. While the workouts are great, what keeps me here are the truly awesome people in the Reach community. In fact, we've been contemplating downsizing and moving closer to the city, but haven't pulled the trigger because I don't want to leave all the great friends I have here.

💥💥 What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?

HSPU, or any variation that puts me upside down because it makes me dizzy.

💥💥 Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?

For the last 5 years you're most likely to see me at 9:30am. If I can't make that I'll do noon or 4:00. I'm almost certain you'll never see me at 5:30am, though I feel like I'm missing out on some great comradery among that crew.

💥💥What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?

At 56, I'm thrilled to have notched Deadlift and Power Clean PRs in the last year. But what brings me the most joy is a scene like this: one of our workout buddies approaches a heavy lift or gymnastics move they haven't hit before, a look of trepidation on their face, we're all cheering them on, and they nail it. Fist bumps all around (remember those?). Especially when it is someone without much athletic background who achieves something basic they never thought possible.

💥💥What type of music do you enjoy working out to?

I like any music that takes my mind off how my body is feeling. But when I'm the DJ, as I was a couple times in Dina's Sunday morning classes this summer, I play 80's Classic Rock.

💥💥Name a favorite movie and why?

The Da Vinci Code. I love piecing together clues to make a discovery.

💥💥Where is your favorite vacation destination?

Costa Rica: combining adventures, rain forest, volcanoes, and beaches all in one trip.

💥💥What do you do for work?

I start, grow, and sell software companies. I'm the founder and CEO of SlapFive which makes cloud software for marketing automation. I also serve on the advisory boards of several other software start-up companies.

💥💥 What would be your dream job?

Playing on the PGA tour. But since that ain't happenin, after I sell my current company, I plan to do my dream job, which is to be an angel investor where I fund and guide start-up companies founded by first-time entrepreneurs who don't have access to traditional venture capital.

💥💥What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Kimball Farms Mocha Chip. A close second is Kimball's Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Yogurt.

💥💥 What are your hobbies outside of the gym?

Pre-COVID, my favorite activity outside the gym was playing Volleyball. Since COVID, I needed a socially distanced activity so I took up golf, and am surprised how much I like it given I always viewed it as an old-people's sport. I guess the shoe fits.

💥💥 Where did you grow up?

I grew up on Cape Cod in the town of Yarmouth. My family owned dinner theaters and I worked every job on the restaurant side of the house.

💥💥 What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining Reach Athletics?

I always introduce myself to people who are doing a few classes to test it out, and say: "If you are serious about wanting to improve your physical AND mental health, join now, because IMO there is no better way to stay motivated to put in the work and get the results than to be part of an incredibly supportive community of fantastic coaches and members like we have here at Reach." I also tell people who are in my generation that to avoid injuries, you can and should scale workouts to a level that challenges but doesn't break you.
