Our toilets are not cooperating. P*e before you come to the barn!

❄️ Cold-Weather Exercise Guidelines for Horses 🐎
Healthy, acclimated horses are built for cold — but how hard we ask them to work should vary by temperature. These general ranges reflect what many veterinarians and equine care experts recommend (temps are indoor arena air temps):
📍 Above 32°F (0°C)
• Normal riding and work are generally safe.
• Warm up muscles thoroughly as always
📍 32°F to 20°F (0°C to –6°C)
• Light work okay — walking and easy trotting, maybe light canter.
• Take extra time warming up and cooling out.
• Avoid heavy exertion that makes them breathe hard in cold air.
📍 20°F (–6°C)
• Most veterinarians suggest this as a practical cutoff for cantering, faster work, or longer schooling.
• If below this point, keep sessions short and slow (walk/trot only). I think many trainers and riders think this temp is still acceptable for regular work but you could be putting your horse’s health at risk.
📍 Below 10-15°F (–12 to –9°C)
• Most horses can tolerate being outside safely if dry, sheltered from wind, and monitored — but there’s no performance benefit to heavy work in these temps.
• Risk of airway irritation and muscle stiffness goes up as air gets colder.
• Consider alternative work like things you can do in hand. Walking and moving is good. Your goal is zero exertion.
Your horses lower airway can be irritated by overworking them in cold temps. This can lead to decreased lung health over time.
Stay safe and warm. Protect your horses. If your horse is at a trainer’s barn, be sure you are communicating the care and caution you want to see in place for your horse.
