The University community's first bike shop opened in 1896— owned and operated by Clement Bainbridge McKennie, a 4th generation Corner merchant. His great-grandfather was Clement Pynes McKennie who at 21-years old had founded not only the University Bookstore but Charlottesville's first newspaper as well, the Central Gazette (1820). The bike shop was located in the 1300-block of West Main Street, just beyond the railroad trestle (which was installed when the road was dug out beneath the railroad tracks in 1901). The new bike shop signaled a nationwide boom in cycling in the 1890s that had been made possible by invention of the "safety bike" in 1885. UVA students even formed the "University Wheel Club" in 1896.

The next Charlottesville Celebrate250 neighborhood bike ride will take place this Sunday, September 30th.
Belmont is this month's featured neighborhood. We will meet at 1:30 pm on the northwest corner of Avon and Garrett, just across the Belmont bridge from downtown and across Garrett St from Community Bike's new digs.

[07/17/12] In case you missed the note, Nelson County Life Magazine Publisher Tommy Stafford will be on WINA Radio in Charlottesville with Coy Barefoot on Tuesday – July 17th just after 4PM to reflect and remember more about The Cookie Lady.
We are sorry to say that June Curry has passed away on Monday, July 16th. Nelson County Life posted a nice story this morning in memory of her. RIP June, February 8, 1921-July 16th, 2012.
