Team Immunity had a field trip today, while honoring the social distancing directives. The trip ( which included a lengthy pow wow discussion to solve the world problems and an attitude adjustment series ) commenced at the Roulett home and moved onto the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. One of the stops was Szalayโ€™s to inspect the fields for crop rotation and corn production. The Blue Herron Hookery was one of the drive buy viewings. In the future we will go to the famous Country Maid Ice Cream stand to discuss Phase II of our short term strategies. Lots of fun. So happy to see each other on person!

Our body released the "love hormone" or "cuddle chemical" Oxytocin when we sense we are included with the group & getting along with "the herd"

Oxytocin is released when we feel we have the safety of social support & is a natural response to a basic human driver.

๐Ÿ˜ง Due to the pandemic this hormone may not be getting released in you as much- but there are great ways to address this simply by knowing how our brain works:

When you are stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, or sinking into other "Fear-Based Emotions" - first breathe in deeply and exhale slowly.

The purpose of this exercise is to ease the feelings of isolation.

Isolation threatens our biological drives to be with the herd- so on a primal level, we might be feeling those fear-based emotions because we sense we are not with a group.

Historically we USED to be more herd-like than now. Today we are much more independent.

Remind yourself that you are choosing to live an independent life, you are not an animal, you are a human with some old-wiring from our days as tribal-like-creatures. But many of our responses are outdated!

Today, your sense of safety is not truly threatened by being alone- it is only temporary.

What are more ways you can stimulate Oxytocin while you are alone? (ie building social bonds while alone)

Simply awesome

Jim Rowe, 70, was hesitant at first, but once he stepped into Clermont CrossFit in Minneola, Florida, his nerves relaxed. Now heโ€™s lost 75 lb., gained energy and made new friends.

Roweโ€™s dedication has transferred over into his home life, as well.

โ€œSince Jimโ€™s been going to CrossFit, we do seem to have a different way of life,โ€ says Roweโ€™s wife, Pamela. โ€œWeโ€™ve always been extremely close, but now we even get in the kitchen together. We cook, we clean up, we laugh more than I think weโ€™ve ever laughed.โ€

When Jim was diagnosed with a large blockage that could lead to a โ€œwidowmakerโ€ heart attack, his doctors said he was likely alive because of CrossFit training and improved nutrition. Today, Jimโ€™s been given a clean bill of health, and his cardiologist told him to return to the gym.

โ€œHe says, โ€˜Let me tell you: Donโ€™t change a thing,โ€™โ€ Jim recalls. โ€œโ€˜I want you to go back.โ€™โ€

Mindfulness is not simply "being happy".

It's a decision to NOT focus on unimportant things and a decision TO focus on the few things that do.

Mental toughness is a skill that requires practice and betterement. It's also a skill that requires pateince.

One of the simpliest tricks is to take a breath and counting to three. This life hack is a simple way to switch from emotional REACTING to thoughtful RESPONSE.

Our minds are full of thoughts- some in support of your happiness & some not. Notice that it's natural to have so much happening in the mind. No need to judge. This is simply practicing the skill of focus ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘

Let Me Tell You About CrossFit.

Last week we posted some great stretches to try in a nice little session.

But we really would love if everyone had a stretching/mobility routine of their own after EVERY workout, and ideally, every day!

We like to think of your workout as 3 parts:
1๏ธโƒฃWarm Up
2๏ธโƒฃWorkout
3๏ธโƒฃRecovery

& Recovery can include a few things:

๐Ÿ’ฆ-a cool-down where you walk, bike, or jog at a very slow pace and eventually stop when your heart rate is back to normal BPM

๐Ÿ™†โ€โ™‚๏ธ -mobility, and/or flexibility

(FYI: Flexibility is defined as "the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to lengthen passively through a range of motion", whereas mobility is the "ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion" )

One way to increase your range of motion (and therefore avoid injury by tending to muscle's health) is to ensure you are training it daily, just like anything else.

๐Ÿ’ชJust like any type of fitness, Flexibility & Mobility have to be trained!

And just as you would show up for a specific amount of timeโฑ for a workout, you must show up for a specific amount of time to Recovery with stretching or using mobility tools to work out tight muscles and increase blood flow.

๐Ÿ…ท๐Ÿ…พ๐Ÿ†† ๐Ÿ†ƒ๐Ÿ…พ ๐Ÿ†‚๐Ÿ†ƒ๐Ÿ…ฐ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†ƒ:

โฐSet an alarm each evening when your day is winding down.
If you currently do not do this, start small: 5 minutes.

๐ŸฆตStretch a new body part each day of the week.
On longer sessions, work through more body parts.

Ideas for Lower Body: hamstrings, calves, arches of feet, ankle mobility, It Band, Quads, Glutes

Ideas for areas that get missed: Lats, rear Delt, Pecs, Wrists/forearms

Upper Body: Traps, Triceps, Shoulder area
