Sail making and repair services.
Marchal Sailmakers is a full service repair loft that can help you with any of your sail repair or service needs.
The warm weather has really bought out the sailors. Picked up two sails with the RIB yesterday, and we had eight sails on the loft floor by noon. Looks like sailing is back in SF Bay.
Due to the Corona Virus restrictions currently in place we will be working limited hours for the near future.
We will still be available, but on an appointment basis only.
Please feel free to use the drop boxes to drop off sails and then contact us at the number below.
Some news about our friends at Doyle Sailmakers:
“I am sending this note to inform you of some changes that will be occurring over the next couple of months. As you might be aware, the property at Alameda Marina is being developed into a residential housing complex. In response we will be phasing out local production over the next few weeks, and new sail production will be shifted to a number of our certified Doyle production facilities outside of the Bay Area. This will free up resources in terms of time allocation, enabling us to be more efficient and devote more time to our clients. As most of you know our focus has always been on providing an excellent customer experience and this will continue. We truly care about our customers and always do what we believe is best for them.
Most of our new customers are the result of a referral from a current client, which we greatly appreciate. Customer service will continue to be paramount. I will be moving my office to the Sail California headquarters at Marina Village in Alameda, a great location which will allow me to continue to use my expertise and 30 years of sailmaking experience to provide you with top quality products and services. In addition, I will now also be able to assist you in buying or selling your next boat. Our long term relationship with expert sailmaker Dominic Marchal, a former Doyle Sails service manager, will continue and ensure that sail repairs and service will be completed nearby at his fully equipped Marchal Sails repair shop in Grand Marina. I'm excited about this new phase for our business and for the opportunities it will provide to both our valued clients and Doyle Sailmakers San Francisco.
We wish Bill, Ed, Scotty, Carl, and the rest of the Doyle staff the best of luck going forward and want to thank Bill for his recommendation of us and our service work here at Marchal Sailmakers.
Another in the popular series of “how impractical of a loft car can Dominic get away with?’
A nice thanks from the folks at the Encinal Yacht Club junior program for our support of their program.
A nice Yelp review from a recent customer...
Based on the overwhelming number of recommendations for Marchal Sailmakers I left my tattered jib in their convenient drop box last night, and it was repaired and back in the box for me to pick up tonight after work.
He was a pleasure to work with, using online invoicing and billing, responsive to telephone calls, and the price was very reasonable.
I'm really happy with the work, and will definitely go back to him with my mainsail when it needs maintenance.
Seriously, this was easier and faster than dropping off dry cleaning. He's got the goods and should thrive.
Barry came by the loft and got a free hat and some some Bulldog love... its all happening here at Marchal Sailmakers.
It’s National dog day, so here is our head of Global Bulldog Operations doing his thing here at the loft...
We got a new batch of Marchal Sailmakers wide brim hats in. Swing by the loft and check them out.
Sometimes it’s the simple things, like a pack of shiny new awls, that make a sailmaker happy.
So that’s how a sewing machine works...
Just got this from a customer coming into the finish of the Transpac. We put this spinnaker back together for him after he burst it on the Coastal Cup last month.
"Frankenstein off Oahu, thanks man we needed this!"
Some nice feedback from our friends at the Cal Sailing Club.
I just wanted to thank you for your constant, excellent repairs you do for us. The UFO sail is perfect.
Gary sent us some pictures of his custom furling headsail cover. Looks pretty smart.
Working in Sicily this week with a couple of different customers. Good work if you can get it.
Sacrificial UV cover in the colours of the pride flag. Looking forward to seeing it up on the boat.
Thank you Alameda Magazine for such a nice article on our little business.
Looks like Tyler and the cadets at Cal Maritime, my old school, are having fun with their new toy.
sailinganarchy.com Conditions for Saturday’s 33nm Cabrillo I Race around the Coronado Islands were about as bad as they could get. The forecast showed no wind. It was raining. It was cold.
We did some work for Nathalie late last week getting her ready for the weekend races, when the racing was canceled Nathalie and her team took the opportunity to get in some good practice.

#FunFactFriday - After submarine USS R-14 ran out of fuel and lost radio communications while searching for a missing ship in 1921, the crew stitched together blankets, hammocks and battery deck covers and then spent 5 days under sail to travel 120 miles back to Hawaii. The R-14's skipper received a letter of commendation from Submarine Division Commander, CDR Chester Nimitz
The property manager is re-doing the parking lot here at the loft. If you need help getting sails to or from the loft please give us a call and we will be happy to help you out.
This is what came in today. So much for it being the off season.
[09/04/18] We will be out of the loft until Monday, Sept 10th. we can still be reached by phone, email, or Facebook. Be right back... the Marchal Sailmakers Team.
Interesting video of how sail cloth used to be made.
Lovely old film showing how traditional flax sail cloth was made. I found it fascinating and hope you will also.
An oddly squiggly cell phone picture of a Santa Cruz 50 Spinnaker we put back together last week. They are calling it the Harry Potter Spinnaker in honor of the shape of the repair. They flew it in a 30kt gust coming through the gate on Saturday. Thanks to Hawkeye for the photo.
Seven years ago today we opened Marchal Sailmakers. We just want to say thank you to everyone for their continued support and we look forward to many more years to come.
One day we may have to have that grand opening party we promised everyone...
One of the benefits of sponsoring the Delta Ditch Run is we get a bottle of Mt Gay Black Barrel Rum, which is specially bottled for the Stockton Sailing Club.
Early morning drop off of a 72ft Catamaran mainsail after some bolt rope and batten pocket repairs.

We are happy to be a sponsor for the Stockton Sailing Clubs Delta Ditch Run for the 4th year in a row. This is always one of our favorite races and we are happy to support the SSC and this race.
An article from a 1963 Sports Illustrated about sailmaking right when sailmakers where switching to Dacron and Nylon cloth.
si.com He was a little old man in a faded blue shirt and overalls, and he sat and sewed in a sunny nook of a boatyard stitching cotton into sails as his father and grandfather had done before him. What happened to him? He vanished. "The old sailmakers were men who worked with their hands," says 3...
Last summer the loft was asked to sew up some fabric as part of "A Famous Rock Stars' Iconic outfit for a Touring Museum Exhibit". It was a rush job that had us working late over a weekend, but now that I see it I think it was worth it. Check it out here...
A nice thank you gift from the folks at the Stockton Sailing Club for our continuing sponsorship of the Delta Ditch Run.
Working on a sail here in the loft and a giant spider comes marching out from underneath it. Maybe I’ll go out to lunch now.
