Great Addition To Jean Sweeney Park

We have been working with Alameda Recreation & Parks Department to provide a water fountain in the park for our many doggie visitors. We're happy to announce it has arrived. The fountain in front of the restroom building has been replaced with the new one with a watering bowl. Push the button to allow water to flow into the bowl. As hot weather has arrived, doggies will enjoy the wonderful addition.

With the nice long walking path, the water bowl and the 3 doggie waste bag stations, Jean Sweeney Park is truly a dog friendly park.

Cross Alameda Trail (bike & walk) set to extend beyond Jean Sweeney Park

The land for this part of the Cross Alameda Trail was part of the Belt Line Railroad law suit that was decided in the favor of the City of Alameda and thanks to the efforts of Jean Sweeney.

The City of Alameda is thrilled to invite you to the Grand Opening Celebration of the newest segment of the Cross Alameda Trail on Saturday, February 29th, from 10am to Noon (details below and here). I’m sure you will agree, this new mile-long biking, jogging, and walking facility will vastly improve opportunities to safely and easily walk and bike in Alameda, including accessing parks, the waterfront, College of Alameda, Webster Street Business District, Jean Sweeney Open Space Park, Alameda Point, Boys and Girls Club, ACLC, Alameda Housing Authority, to name just a few. We are happy now to reward your patience during the construction phase and will very soon be able to realize the fruition of this almost-30-year vision of building a walking and biking trail in this former railroad right of way. Thank you for all your attention and patience!

We received this notice from ARPD Director Wooldridge

Please note sections of the Jean Sweeney Park playground will be closed for a few days as ARPD continues to make improvements to the Park. Large construction vehicles will be on site this Wednesday, May 1, at noon until 5pm on Friday May 3, to relocate the granite blocks next to the slide as seating throughout the park. Closed areas include the slide and tire swing, along with intermittent closures of the nearby pedestrian trail of the Cross Alameda Trail. Open areas include the sand area, tot playground, climbing logs, zipline, restroom, and picnic area. Please be aware and cautious of the construction and vehicles during this time. Thank you!

What happens next in the Jean Sweeney Park?

We have received questions about the unfinished parts of the park.

The next step is for the City of Alameda to gain access to 2 acres along the south side where the fence is along the houses. This land is still owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city has filed for imitate domain to purchase the UP land from Wood Street to Sherman and the UP land from 8th street to Constitution Way. Once that land is owned by the City, some of the southern streets may be opened into the park. Also, the Alameda Food Bank will be able to start planning and building their new permanent building that will be on the South side 90' from where their present site is.

Also, the ARPD will start to look for grants to build the western phase 2 which will include the community gardens, foraging forest that will have fruit trees and a demonstration garden to show people how to grow home gardens. There will be an outdoor classroom, a tool lending library and another playground. Presently there is no schedule for when these things will happen as new funding is required.

After the west end phase 2 is finished, the center phase 3, which will be an open space forest with wondering trails, will be completed. The bike, and walking paths will complete a circle around the park and a skills bike path for learning how to ride a bike will be built.

Is the park Dog Friendly?
The Jean Sweeney Park is absolutely dog friendly (on a leash) There were many dogs at the opening day ceremonies and when we visited the next day there were lots of people walking their dogs. The dogs seem to love the place. The walking path within the park is 2/3 of a mile long so it's a good walk down and back for most doggies.

There are no fenced areas for dogs so they do have to be on a leash at all times.
