Strong feet, strong foundation!

Barefoot videos and pictures have kind of become an unintentional trend for us over the past few months. This video is a really great example as to why.

As you can see, our client @kimbahleey is performing a Single Leg RDL. Great exercise for hamstring and glutes, but also an incredible exercise to display balance on one leg.
.
.
With her shoes on, you can’t really see the foot fighting to find stability, because it is essentially hidden. It is also much harder to work on actually engaging those muscles on the bottom of the foot with the shoe on because it is acting as a bandage. However when the shoe is off, you can clearly see how much harder the foot is working, and the level of difficulty this presents.
.

Moral of the story is, when you can, train barefoot or at least with some minimalist shoes as much as possible. Strong feet, strong foundation!

Nothing beats the basics. One of the main downfalls with social media is that with fitness professionals, or gyms, there is always some crazy exercise being invented on a daily basis in hopes to stay relevant.

Relevance means nothing if you aren’t making progress and working towards a goal! Here we have Ian repping 3 second eccentric push ups with a 10 pound weight on his lower back.
.
.
This might not look like much, but when he first started his lower back would extend and fall to the floor before the rest of his body after a few push ups without any weight. By getting stronger, and forcing the body to maintain good position, his push ups look great and he is making tremendous strides in the gym.

One of the best ways to improve your Chin Ups is to get yourself strong in the position! Here we have our client Glori, 65 years young, absolutely crushing some Chin Up holds. 10-15 second intervals to reach 60-75 seconds is no easy task, and she made it look easy!

How could you not enjoy your workout when your breaks involve petting this sweet girl!

To touch on our latest post, there is a lot of confusion on whether someone should stop training or not after suffering an injury. We believe that one of the best ways to improve and speed up recovery is to work hand in hand with doctors, physical therapists, and a personal trainer who all are on the same page and are looking to help get an individual back to 100%.

There is no reason why fitness professionals can’t work together with people in their field or in doctors offices to speed up the recovery process. Here at Infinity, we have Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Cardiologists, Orthopedists, and other medical professionals who work directly with our staff to give our clients the best possible experience in getting them back to doing what they love.

There is a lot of confusion around injury as a result of spending too much attention on symptoms rather than root cause. Was vacuuming really the cause of a low back injury, or is it muscle imbalance and years of poor mechanics?

Here we have a client performing a band resisted lateral bear crawl, forcing her to engage her inner core muscles and fight against the band which is making her body want to rotate into a compromised position. This individual was diagnosed with two protruding discs in her lumbar spine, in which her first doctor almost immediately said “Get surgery, or you will never feel better”, Those words are intense for anyone, but for someone who doesn't have proper knowledge on rehab and training, it sounds like a death sentence. Seek other opinions and alternatives to surgery whenever possible.

One thing that we can say with confidence is the second you stop moving, the body will adapt, and will weaken. You have the power to change that narrative! Strength and conditioning has two pathways. It can either contribute to injury or help prevent it.

Finding balance in this life is one thing we all search for. It is very hard to balance work, school, a social life, and finding time to make it to the gym each week. Kayleigh has found out a way to make this work, and has done it flawlessly!

Kayleigh set goals the first day she walked in to our facility, and has done everything in her power to crush them by dropping 15 pounds and over 5% Body Fat in 3 months. She did this with a full-time school schedule as well as working, which is difficult for anyone.
.
.
This just goes to show people that anyone is capable of hitting goals they set out for themselves. All we need to do is stay consistent, and try our best to stay on track. If you do get off track, do your best to get right back on track the next day.
.
.
Thank you Kayleigh for proving that if you work hard, even with a full plate of outside stressors, you can accomplish what you set out to do.

Client Spotlight - Rosemary

It is part of human nature to lose strength and balance as we age. One way to slow this process down is to continue to move! Rosemary just turned 90 years old a few months ago (we’ll let that one sink in) and still comes in 2-3 times/week, every week!

There is nothing more motivating than someone in their 80s or 90s coming in on a consistent basis, and working hard to be better than what they were yesterday. It should make anyone of any age feel that they could do the same thing!
.
.
Thank you Rosemary for coming in every week, making us laugh, and helping us realize the profound effect you can have on someone by just having a positive attitude and outlook on life. And thank you for being our “Bonus Grandma."

[04/18/19]   Inspiration from The Foot Collective. A huge reminder to us all that our feet and toes need to move just as much, if not more than all other parts of our body!

If your shoulder or hip is tight we work diligently to regain some mobility and get back to doing what we were doing before. Why don’t we do that with our feet?!

This has taken some time for me to feel comfortable putting my full body weight in these positions so start with very light pressure and progress as tolerated.

Meet Mike. Mike is 87 years young and started training with us a few months back to improve his health. Mike suffered from some shortness of breath and some balance issues. .

Fast forward 3 months and his doctor is very pleased with his increased energy, and increased capacity for walking longer distances each day. .

For someone 87 who still works 60+ hours per week (yes, you read that correctly) being able to get up and down stairs with ease has become a huge goal, and he has certainly achieved that! We could all take some notes out of Mikes book. True bad ass 💪

This means we should be training barefoot or in minimalist shoes as much as possible. This allows the muscles in the bottom of the foot to grow stronger.

The stronger our feet are, the better our foundation for any and all movement.

The benefits to a quality strength training program are unmatched in the world of fitness. Especially today when programming has become ‘how many burpees can you do in 10 minutes’, or any random selection of exercises thrown into an AMRAP has become the new norm.

Having a plan, and working with someone to execute that plan will outweigh leaving the gym pouring in sweat or crawling out of the gym because you’re so exhausted.
