Public Speaking Confidence: Find your inner voice and express what matters most with Dr. Doreen Downing.

For many people, speaking anxiety begins the moment they know they'll have to speak.

You see the meeting invitation

Someone says, "Let's go around the room..."

You're invited for an interview

It's your turn to introduce yourself

You hear, "Any questions?"

โžก๏ธ What usually happens next?

Pick the answer that sounds most like you, then tell me more in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

It can get frustrating ๐Ÿ˜– when you know you have to speak

- One thought quickly becomes ten

- Your mind starts imagining everything that could go wrong

- Your body reacts before you've even said a word

- Your words get stuck in your throat, refusing to come out

- You wish you didn't have to do it because escaping feels easier than staying

โœจ I've met so many thoughtful, capable people with meaningful ideas to share

Yet when it's time to speak, their mind and body seem to work against them

No one should have to go through this alone

Over the next few days, I'll be sharing something that's been on my heart

In the meantime, what's your experience been?

One of the biggest challenges of speakers I see isn't a lack of preparation.

It's what happens to your attention once you begin speaking.

You want people to hear your message.

Instead, your inner critic keeps stealing your attention.

"Do I sound nervous?"
"Am I making sense?"
"What was I going to say next?"

When so much mental energy is spent monitoring yourself, it's difficult to stay present with the people you're trying to reach.

That's one reason speaking can still feel difficult, even after you've prepared.

Has this ever happened to you? I'd genuinely like to hear about your experience.

You expect all that preparation to make the next speaking opportunity feel easier.

Instead, the same nerves show up again.

So you prepare even more.

At some point, it's worth asking whether more preparation is really the answer.

I've found that many people aren't missing another speaking technique. They're missing an understanding of why this keeps happening.

Iโ€™m going to show you the step that has helped so many of my clients stop guessing and begin moving toward speaking confidence.

If you'd like me to share more about this, let me know in the comments โญ

When someone suggested Beth start a caregiver support group, she couldn't believe what she was hearing

"I need support. How can you even ask me to provide support right now?"

Listen to why that moment stayed with her, and what eventually changed so she can finally fully express herself

Heart pounding. Face getting hot. Voice shaking.

You try to calm your body so you can speak clearly.

Most people focus on stopping that reaction.

I've spent years wondering about something else.

Why does the reaction happen in the first place?

You can prepare until you know your points by heart

But the moment all eyes are on you, your brain can still shut down

I've heard this from many capable people over the years

They know what they want to say, and they've prepared well. Then the moment comes to speak, and the words just disappear

People assume they just need more practice. More preparation.

But they've already done that, and it still happens

So maybe it's time to ask:

Why does this keep happening? Why does my body react like this?

I've heard those questions for more than 30 years. They've led me to create something I've been wanting to share with you

Amy Harrington was a vice president. Same title, same years of experience as the men around her. But something about those rooms still made her feel like she had less of a right to speak than they did.

In the latest episode of Find Your Voice, Change Your Life, Amy and her sister Nancy Harrington talk about what it really takes for a woman's voice to finally be heard.

Hear the rest of their story.

That's the whole idea behind Speaking Circlesยฎ

A small group gathers in a room. Each person takes a turn speakingโ€”not to perform, not to impress, just to be received by people who are fully present with them, one person at a time

No script. No technique. No moment where you're managing how you come across

In the Circle, confident speaking comes from being met with an open gaze and full attention, exactly as you are

That's Relational Presence, and it's the heart of every Speaking Circleยฎ
