A part of the Berkeley and Albany community for 60 years, Hanabi Judo offers classes for all. Our goal is to become a healthy and fun part of your life.

Judo, meaning “The Gentle Way,” is a very effective means of self-defense while being a safe, non-violent way of controlling an opponent. Judo emphasizes throwing techniques and ground-work but also features chokes and arm-locks. Judo is an Olympic event and the world’s second most popular sport (behind soccer). Hanabi means "Fireworks" in Japanese and its energy, brightness and excitement truly express the spirit of our judo. For almost half a century we have been a part of the Albany and Berkeley community developing not just champions but good people of strength and character. We have produced over a hundred state, national, and international champions, but most of our members don’t actually compete but simply enjoy working out and learning in our friendly atmosphere. From beginning classes to family judo, women’s judo to kata, we have classes of various levels for children and adults alike. You can join us at any time. Regular promotional exams will have you going from white belt to yellow and, hopefully, all the way to black. Friends and family are always welcome to watch. We also offer Judo & Japanese Culture Summer Camp, which is an adventure in physical and cultural education for children from 5 to 14. Please see our website for more information!

October In Class-Shiai

October’s In Class Shiai (tournament) will be this coming Saturday, October 24. Our little Chibi and Hajime students will be doing a sumo competition at 9:55 followed by our Honto students in the real team competition at 11:00. There will be awards for all! Everyone is welcome so please bring family and friends. (Our Oyako and Chibi classes will go on Saturday at 8:15 and 9:00 as usual.)

National Coaching Certification Clinic

I will be attending a three day clinic in November to earn the new Certification to train American USA Judo coaches. While I have been teaching these clinics for years USA Judo will be bringing in former world champion and Olympic medalist Neil Adams from Britain to roll out a new standardized curriculum. It will be fun to learn new skills and meet many of my old judo friends from around the country.

The Fresno Judo tournament will be on Sunday, October 18. The day before there will be a Clinic given by national and international champion Janine Nakao Cotti.

Jonathan Yang, 2026 World Judo Championships

The 2026 World Judo Championships concluded this past weekend in Baku, Azerbaijan and an American, Johnathan Yang from California, went farther than any other American since 1999. Johnathan, just 19, had an amazing full-point throw against the home-town favorite and world’s number one ranked Aghayev of Azerbaijan to make it to the quarter finals, eventually finishing in 7th place.

Another player, Yelyzaveta Lytrvynenko, now fighting for United Arab Emirates, Yurii Sensei has known since she was a girl growing up in Ukraine. She won her division and is now world champion.

Our Sana Sensei has worked out, and is friends with, the Japanese women’s team which took 4 gold, 1 bronze and who won the gold in mixed team event.

Women’s Judo Clinic

This past Saturday, October 10, City College of San Francisco hosted a judo clinic featuring international champion Anzu Yamamoto of Japan. Our Sana Sensei is a friend of Yamamoto Sensei. Both Sana and our Shuhan enjoyed the clinic and enjoyed being with the many judo women from around Northern California who attended. 🥋🎇
